This is going on in Texas. Squatters have been taking over houses that have been abandoned due to non-payment claiming an old law says that if a property has been vacant for a certain amount of time, then they can move in and claim it. One guy was giving classes on how to do this. Banks have had a heck of a time getting them out.
It’s called adverse possession.

In what part of Texas is this happening? I had not heard about it before you posted that.

The house wasn't abandoned though. The owners, who had just purchased it, were on vacation and it went through renovations.
She also had a car stolen.

A fellow employee had a renter who wouldn't vacate the premises. He paid the local Hell's Angels to persuade the occupant to leave and never return. Money well spent.
Adverse possession is theft with the blessing of a mentally ill judge. Any judge that rules that way should be removed from the bench.
