Sources: Joe Paterno's statue stays

The embattled members of Penn State's Board of Trustees quietly have decided to leave Joe Paterno's statue standing -- at least for now and, some hope, forever, according to sources with firsthand knowledge of the trustees' private discussions this week.

The trustees' reluctance to remove the statue is motivated, in part, by a desire not to offend alumni and students who adore the late coach despite the damning findings of his role in the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse cover-up detailed in the Freeh report, the sources said. Some trustees also said in interviews they want to resist being pressured by the media into a sudden decision about such an emotionally charged issue.

“If they don’t want it, I’ll put it in my front yard.”

Will you put it to the left or right of the John Wayne Gacey statute?

Lighten up, all of you. I mean no disrespect to the victims or anything. I’m just sick of the whole god-damned thing. I just spent a week at PSU. All of the people I spoke to are as sick of the media as they are Sandusky and all his enablers. Like me, they love Paterno for everything else he did for the university and are completely saddened and angered by his role in this whole sordid business. We all want this whole thing to go away. If taking down the statue will hasten that, so be it. If it will lessen the pain to the victims and their families by one minute, then do it. Let’s not forget, there’s lots of blame to go around here, starting with the victims’ so-called parents. All I hear is, “Where was Paterno?” I haven’t heard anyone say, “Where were their mothers? Their fathers?” Huh?

I get the feeling that in the end, it’s not going to be their call whether or not the statue is going to stay up or not.

Every Board Member who was supposed to be on duty during the Tenure of Sandusky should be terminated immediately.

This.

Every article I see like this, and each whining comment I read from PSU supporters, makes it clear that the football program needs to be shut down and the place swept clean. They are simply unable to objectively understand the gravity of what happened and are unwilling to take the drastic steps needed to make sure this never happens again. The statue probably should at the very least be removed from prominence. But it is way down the list of priorities right now. There is a moral failure in "Happy Valley" that continues to this day, and it starts at the very top.

Sandusky preyed on boys from broken homes and dysfunctional families as a M.O., just as any clinical predator does. There is an old saying that it just takes one Oh Sh!t to sink a whole boatload of atta-boys and this one sunk the whole friggin PSU navy (Rhetorically speaking). I couldn’t care less if Paterno gave birth to God himself, there is absolutely no justification or absolution because of his so-called good works to condone what he did for so long for the good of the fargin university, I mean the golden goose football program.

OK. I’ll agree to indict Paterno if you’ll agree to indict the victims’ parents for child neglect. I have yet to hear one single opinionator make mention of the fact that these kids were at risk because their parents were asleep at the switch. Not one. Everyone is guilty in this case-—Sandusky, Paterno, various PSU officials, AND the boys’ parents. While their kids were being abused by Sandusky, their parents were no doubt smoking crack, sitting wasted in a bar, or otherwise unavailable and unattentive to their kids.

They should leave the statue. Just turn it around so that it’s looking the other way.

Shut down the whole football program? Who’s going to be hurt by this? None of the perpetrators or their enablers. The hoteliers who depend on football weekend business, the restaurant owners, all their student employees, the sweatshirt and souvenir manufacturers and vendors and all of their low-income (and innocent) employees, the kids who work in the stadium, and on and on and on. Thousands of people, mostly young and low-income, dependent on college football related jobs and completely innocent of these crimes, will be adversely affected by cancelling the football season. They didn’t do anything wrong and they don’t deserve to be punished.
