The Return of Welfare as We Know It

When Republicans controlled Congress and Bill Clinton sat as president of the United States, one of the signature bills of the era was passed: welfare reform. No longer could someone just sit around and collect checks. Someone receiving government assistance was required to work. The bill was touted as "the end of welfare as we know it." Guess what? It's back, and it's back because Barack Obama would rather have people sit around than work.

As noted in The Daily Caller:

The Department and Health and Human Services announced the agency will issue waivers for the federal work requirement of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program -- considered a central facet of welfare reform in 1996 -- Thursday.

The "Information Memorandum" states that the agency will be issuing waivers for TANF's work participation requirements for parents and caretakers as a way to find new approaches to better employment outcomes.

"While the TANF work participation requirements are contained in section 407, section 402(a)(1)(A)(iii) requires that the state plan '[e]nsure that parents and caretakers receiving assistance under the program engage in work activities in accordance with section 407,'" the memo, signed by HHS Director of the Office of Family Assistance, Earl Johnson, explained. "Thus, HHS has authority to waive compliance with this 402 requirement and authorize a state to test approaches and methods other than those set forth in section 407, including definitions of work activities and engagement, specified limitations, verification procedures, and the calculation of participation rates."

The Washington Examiner reports on Newt Gingrich's reaction. Gingrichs describes the move by the Obama administration as "almost certainly illegal."...

"Obama's suspension of workfare requirements is almost certainly illegal, a sign of the jobs failure, and a reminder how liberal [O]bama is," Gingrich tweeted this morning following a report from the Heritage Foundation that the Health and Human Services Department had "released an official policy directive rewriting the welfare reform law of 1996."

Gingrich added that "President Clinton and the Republican Congress created a bipartisan work oriented reform of welfare," in a second tweet. "Obama has single handedly destroyed it," Gingrich said.

Paging John Boehner, paging John Boehner!

SSI is the scam the welfare state has grown with, but you have to claim mental illness or retardation. So literally this is the D party base, the mentally ill.

This issue will carry real weight when a state (CA or NY) decides to exercise this “flexibility” and actually drop the work requirement. As noted by others, this will take people off the “looking for work” rolls and artificially reduce the widely published unemployment rate. If/when California does this, it could cause a significant drop in this MSM hyped number prior to the election.
No doubt the regime will trumpet said drop - fake though it may be. There are no honesty boundaries with this administration or the media lackeys that support them.

When I first heard this I had a bona-fide case of the red @$$, then the more I thought about it....

Texas,FL, MI, WI, LA and other states with GOP Guv's will not ease the work rules where you know NY, CA, IL, etc will....

And while we know the public teat sector won't go across the street for a job the will migrate coast to coast for freebies, thereby putting the load on Demonrat strongholds and cleansing our states. The law of unintended consequences strikes again.

If, however, the state does not ask for a waiver, it does not change within that state. The waiver has to be granted after a request is made. I seem to have read that somewhere?

But we need the obamacare mandate in order to punish the ‘free-riders’. Anybody see a problem here?

I take particular delight in feeding animals in national parks, and risking 100 dollar fines for doing so. I always feed healthy stuff, like unsalted roasted peanuts. Have not observed any asthma or allergic reactions yet. Frankly, the Park Service ought to be severely hammered for their methods, especially in Yellowstone.

We have the most obese poor people on the planet. Food stamps should be used in the Michelle Obama method to control what recipients consume. Only healthy foods should be purchased. No pop, candy, or other non nutrious consumables. (My head hurts trying to channel the ‘Progressives’ ultimate goals.)

Listen, YOU DON'T bring impeachment against a sitting President because he attempts to make citizens dependent and broken.

That's immoral but NOT against the law.

What we need to do is VOTE him and all his corrupt liars out of office. Are you with me ?? Do we work to vote the lying dems out of every office in the country?
