Crowd Gathers to Support Alleged Shooter(VA)

Was Rudolph Dean, Jr. acting in self defense when he reportedly shot at another man in January in Rockingham County? Several people in the Valley say he was and now they want justice.

More than 1,000 people have signed a petition to get Dean out of jail on bond. Dozens of those people gathered in Court Square Wednesday to voice their concerns.

Cindy Carr took the podium to talk to the community about why they are upset. Carr said Dean used his gun in self-defense and should not have to stay in jail for that before his trial.

She said this an issue that affects everyone, since Second-Amendment rights may be in question.

"This could be anybody that feels that they have the right to defend themselves when they're attacked,” said Carr. “This could be anybody. It could be you. It could be me. It could be our loved ones in jail tomorrow if this is allowed to go on."

Dean is expected to be in court Thursday for a bond hearing.

These local news companies annoy me, because they tend to omit what state they are writing about. Sometimes it is elsewhere on the page, as often as not it isn’t.

For example, in this case, there is a Rockingham County in three different states.

More journalistic expertise:

“According to Dean, he and the victim, Robert Crawford got into a fight after a road rage incident on Route 340.

Crawford allegedly pulled out a telescoping baton and Dean grabbed his .44 mm pistol to scare him. Dean allegedly then shot Crawford in the neck.”

I, for one, am not going to be terribly intimidated by a 440 micron (.0173 inch) pistol.

It isn’t wise to bring a baton to a gunfight. When you see the gun turn around and get back in the car, tell yourself how stupid road rage it and be glad you lived through it.
