Obama's Rhetoric (Thomas Sowell)
Creators Syndicate ^ | July 18, 2012 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 07/18/2012 11:24:23 AM PDT by jazusamo

Barack Obama's great rhetorical gifts include the ability to make the absurd sound not only plausible, but inspiring and profound.

His latest verbal triumph was to say on July 13th, "if you've been successful, you didn't get there on your own." As an example, "Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business — you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen."

Let's stop and think, even though the whole purpose of much political rhetoric is to keep us from thinking, and stir our emotions instead.

Even if we were to assume, just for the sake of argument, that 90 percent of what a successful person has achieved was due to the government, what follows from that? That politicians will make better decisions than individual citizens, that politicians will spend the wealth of the country better than those who created it? That doesn't follow logically — and certainly not empirically.

Does anyone doubt that most people owe a lot to the parents who raised them? But what follows from that? That they should never become adults who make their own decisions?

The whole point of the collectivist mindset is to concentrate power in the hands of the collectivists — which is to say, to take away our freedom. They do this in stages, starting with some group that others envy or resent — Jews in Nazi Germany, capitalists in the Soviet Union, foreign investors in Third World countries that confiscate their investments and call this theft "nationalization."

Freedom is seldom destroyed all at once. More often it is eroded, bit by bit, until it is gone. This can happen so gradually that there is no sudden change that would alert people to the danger. By the time everybody realizes what has happened, it can be too late,..

Dr. Sowell is truly a national treasure. What saddens me is that the achievment of electing the first black President was wasted on the current idiot in the White House.

This is a great article. It should be sent out to everyone as it has the vision to look down the road to the end result of being “useful idiots.”

‘Barack Obama’s great rhetorical gifts include the ability to make the absurd sound not only plausible, but inspiring and profound.’

Only to the simple minded, those desiring to believe lies or the grossly undiscerning. Anyone w/ discernment knows Barry is a shallow liar unfit for his present office.

Obama has no gifts, rhetorical or otherwise. An average intellect at best who stumbles over the spoken word just as bad as W but he is nowhere near as not as smart as W.

Obama is a con man and con men play to the simple minded, unfortunately it seems there are many but hopefully not as many as in the 2008 election.

As usual, Sowell says it best:
One of the tricks of professional magicians is to distract the audience's attention from what they are doing while they are creating an illusion of magic. Pious talk about "giving back" distracts our attention from the cold fact that politicians are taking away more and more of our money and our freedom.

You can also use the word discriminate, which has been raped by the left. Words do mean something, until collectivists twist them.

Want Obama to lose in Nov? Really want to see him go down?

Then every small business owner ought to have a temporary RIF starting now and tell those who are laid off that it’s because of the economy. Do this in key States and you’ll have a sure win.

It really is the patriotic thing to do since we are at risk of losing our country. We take men and women out of the work force to fight wars. Why not take them out of the work force to fight the internal war that is being waged at home?

Brilliant.

Once again President Doofus shows his total ignorance and makes the same mistake as all Marxists: They all get it backwards. The infrastructure 0bama touts exists because individuals started businesses, hired employees, produced and shipped goods and earned profits.

Commerce causes infrastructure, not the other way around.

I’m not so sure about your plan.

So those RIFFed go on unemployment, food stamps, Obamaphones, etc and become Democrat voters?

It used to be a bad economy was a toxic situation for an incumbent.

But the “never let a crisis go to waste” plan is to convert those affected to Dem voters.

Yes, thats right...as a nation we seem unable to discriminate right & wrong, true & false. Being able to rightly discriminate is a good thing. For a liberal being able to discriminate is a bad thing b/c then they’d be face to face w/ truth...something they work overtime to avoid. Thx for the comment.

Even the envy that politicians stir up against "the rich" is highly focussed on those particular high income-earners whose decisions the politicians want to take over. Others in sports or entertainment can make far more money than the highest paid corporate executive, but there is no way that politicians can take over the roles of Roger Federer or Oprah Winfrey, so highly paid sports stars or entertainers are never accused of "greed.”
I would add, but everyone knows that there is no way that politicians can do what sports/entertainment stars do (or else, as everyone also knows, they would be doing it).
