BOWLING GREEN – It remains to be seen whether presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s new message works for him in Ohio.
But at the very least, he’s found something he can say that clicks when Gov. John Kasich is standing with him on stage.
Kasich introduced Romney today to hundreds at a town-hall style rally in Bowling Green in their first joint appearance since they both spoke at Otterbein University in April. The hint of awkwardness from that Romney-Kasich event – when Romney was lamenting a struggling jobs market and Kasich was boasting about job opportunities in Ohio – was gone, replaced by a shared line of attack that President Barack Obama doesn’t understand business.
Both Romney and Kasich continued the Romney campaign’s week-long attack line of bashing Obama for saying last week: “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that.”
“(Obama) said something which the governor (Kasich) alluded to which really reveals what he thinks about our country, about our people, about freedom,” Romney said.
Romney asked people in the audience who’ve created a business to stand up and raise their hands, and then said “take that, Mr. President.”
Romney, who held a fundraiser in nearby Toledo earlier today, was hoarse when he spoke – sign of strain after impassioned speeches he’s delivered over the last few days. Today’s remarks were more of the same, as Romney seemed to feed off the vibe he was getting from the crowd as he blasted Obama for the president’s “didn’t build that” line. Romney also recognized the several hand-made signs that chastised Obama for the remark.
“These are fun,” Romney repeated over and over. “For those who made those signs, thank you for reminding us who it is in America that creates jobs.”
Obama made the remark last week on the stump as part of a larger context during a speech about the role government-supported infrastructure, such as roads, bridges and the Internet, plays in helping businesses. Romney also added a brand-new wrinkle to his attack, criticizing Obama for holding 100 fundraisers the last six months without holding any meetings with his Jobs Council publicly during that time frame.
“President Obama’s jobs plan, which incorporates ideas from the Jobs Council, could put up to a million people back to work – including teachers, firefighters, cops, construction workers and veterans – help small businesses create jobs right now, and encourage companies to bring jobs back to America,” said Lis Smith, a spokeswoman for Obama’s campaign. “But Mitt Romney opposes it and refuses to offer one of his own.”
Last week was perhaps the toughest for Romney since the general election cycle began, as he faced fierce criticism of conflicting narratives of his departure from Bain Capital and calls that have grown this week for him to release more of his tax returns.
The Ohio Democratic Party sought to play up the tax return angle by drawing a link between Romney’s handling of the issue now and Kasich’s refusal to release more than one year of returns when he was a candidate in 2010. Kasich acknowledged that his campaign and Romney’s have “something very much in common,” but it wasn’t personal taxes.
“They spent all their time trying to smear me because I worked in business,” Kasich said. “ And you know why they did it? Because they had nothing to sell themselves. Now you see one smear attack after another because Mitt Romney was in business and they’ve got nothing to sell.”
Romney was asked during a question-and-answer session with the audience by a woman who identified with the tea party for an assurance that his running mate would be a conservative.
“I can assure you that even though I have not chosen the person who will be my vice president, that person will be a conservative,” Romney said. Potential running mates include U.S. Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio.
Another questioner referred to Obama as a “monster,” which prompted Romney to say “that’s not a term I would use.”
Hopefully, Romney is ready to kick some butt for a change. If he does, he will win by a landslide.
I have never ever met a Harvard graduate, Constitutional Law lecturer and community organizer who had one clue about the economy, let alone having taken a general Econ101 course. =.=
All Willard has to do to defeat that is bring up a new Obama scandal each week - Solyndra this week, F&F the next, ignoring his jobs council after that, running up the debt, paying off political benefactors with taxpayer dollars, non-energy policy, on & on.
People will stop paying attention to the same old tax complaint if they're regularly offered fresh meat.
Romney would do well to expose what Obama means when he speaks of the “middle class”.
WHITE HOUSE COUNCIL OF ECONOMIC ADVISERS: In a January speech noting the middle class has shrunk to 42 percent of households, Alan Krueger, who chairs the council, defined them as making annual earnings within 50 percent of the U.S. median income. The current median income is $49,445, putting middle-class earnings in a range from about $25,000 to $75,000.
This is far more restrictive than the more common “below $250,000” that is erroneously thrown around. We can expect the taxes to go up sharply for the privileged upper class ($75,000 and up).
Obama isn’t ignorant, he is evil.
“You know what he’s been doing over the last six months? In the last six months, he has held 100 fundraisers. And guess how many meetings he’s had with his Jobs Council? None. Zero. Zero, in the last six months,” Romney said. “So it makes it very clear where his priorities are. His priority is not creating jobs for you, his priority is trying to keep his own job, and that’s why he’s going to lose it.”
