Denver shooting suspect's bomb could have "destroyed apartment complex": police

(Reuters) - The sophisticated booby-trap devices Denver-area shooting suspect James Holmes set at his apartment could have killed first responders and destroyed the apartment complex in a massive inferno, an official involved in the probe said on Saturday.

Bomb experts entered the 800-square-foot apartment in the Denver suburb of Aurora after a controlled explosion on Saturday. Inside they found 30 aerial shells filled with gunpowder, two containers brimming with liquid accelerants and an unknown number of bullets left to explode in the resulting fire, according to a law enforcement official on the scene with expertise in improvised explosives.

"Given the amount of explosives that were there, if they detonated ideally, you would have had a very ample explosion with an ensuing thermal effect from the incendiary liquids that would have destroyed that apartment complex," the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

"It's safe to say that whole building would have burned. The explosion would have certainly removed the interior walls in the building and some of the exterior walls" of the brick-built apartment complex, the source added.

I wonder of he dumped the data off his hard drives....

Or was he thinking the explosion would have destroyed whatever PC or apple product he was using ....

100 bucks says DU or Daily Kos was in his bookmarks....

I don’t claim to be an expert on such things, but I do know that bullets don’t explode. They might melt, but unless they were some special configuration like APIT (Armor Piercing Incendiary Tracer) they’ll just melt. Now if there were CARTRIDGES, they would cook off. Basically go poof. They would have to be in a rifle or pistol chamber or something similar to develop enough pressure to be really dangerous.

“an unknown number of bullets left to explode in the resulting fire,”

Said by a total incompetent trying to employ scare tactics and make himself appear knowledgeable and important. He might want to take a couple of classes to learn whether “bullets” explode or cook off during a fire.

OK, here is my tin foil response.

I wonder if the attack could be an Obama October surprise of sorts?

Remember how Obama got a bump after the Grifford shootings?

And how everyone fell in love with Clinton after the Oklahoma City bombing?

Obama will give an eloquent speech at a well televised memorial and suddenly the magic will be back.

Could this mass murderer be an Obama fan?

He likely believed his booby traps would work, and destroy his computers, etc.

Booby Trap Control - It is already illegal to set Booby Traps, even to protect your property from Thieves.

Bomb Control - It is already illegal to own Explosive Devices, TNT etc. without the proper licensing. When I was a kid, this wasn't the case, but there you go.

If the Perp was sitting in his brand new Chevy Volt outside the Theater and ran over and killed twelve people while injuring scores more, would the Liberals threaten to take Cars away from people or require a License to operate one, oh wait.

I just remembered, an Old Guy hit the gas pedal instead of the Brake pedal on his Crown Vic and killed and injured a bunch of people at a Farmers Market some years back. Why didn't the Libtards try to ban Cars back then?

I agree, particularly since the phrase “if they exploded ideally” was included in their statement. I just have a hard time believing all these extreme predictions. My dad told me a long time ago to take everything you hear and read with a grain of salt.

Not half as unrealistic and suspicious as the government’s apprehension and execution of Timothy McVeigh.

There was also at least one case of a muslim who ran people down in his car, with no calls for mental health checks or bans on cars.

Would never throw ammo into a fire and expect it just to cook off.
There’s indeed a Mythbuster’s episode on this:
