Since when does an "unspecified threat" warrant a security detail.

You may be thinking of an "unspecific" or "non-specific" threat.

I'm thinking an "unspecified threat" is one that authorities don't want to give exact details about.

The actual threat could have been very specific indeed.

That doesn't make any sense.

From the article I linked...
The man was questioned by the NYPD and the State Department and has not been charged, sources said.
And if it was a threat serious enough to warrant a security detail then why was he simply questioned and then released?
