Updated at 7:40 a.m. ET: At least 13 people died Sunday and another 10 were injured after a pickup truck loaded with passengers veered off the highway and crashed into trees in rural South Texas, authorities said. State troopers and Goliad County sheriff's investigators were investigating the crash. A trooper told KRIS-TV, the NBC affiliate in Corpus Christi, Tex., that it appeared a tire on the truck blew out before the vehicle went off the road and struck two trees. Authorities said they did not immediately know the names and ages of the victims. Advertise | AdChoices A spokeswoman with the Texas Department of Public Safety told NBC News early Monday that the number of those killed in the crash had risen to 13 after two more victims succumbed to their injuries in local hospitals. Vehicle laden with passengers Gerald Bryant, also of the Texas Department of Public Safety, told The Associated Press the dead and wounded were various ages and that he personally saw two young children among the dead at the scene. "This is the most people I've seen in any passenger vehicle, and I've been an officer for 38 years," Bryant said, referring to the chaotic scene. The white 2000 Ford F-250 pickup was heading north on U.S. 59 around 7 p.m. (9 p.m. ET) Sunday when it traveled off the right side of the highway near the community of Berclair in Goliad County, Bryant said. Follow @msnbc_us The 23 people were loaded inside both the truck's cab and bed. Six of those who died were still inside the truck when emergency crews arrived to find the mangled vehicle, Bryant said.

“23 criminals..sick of the media calling these people “Immigrants” they are criminals..such a shame,”

I don’t think the children were criminals.

There were dead children, you know.

Thirteen dead! What do we ban, pick-up trucks ... illegals ... roads ... trees ... driving over 20 mph?

Thanks for the link....

A pickup truck overloaded with illegal immigrants

The truck was registered in Houston to someone other than the driver, Bryant said. A woman who answered at the address where the truck was registered said she was the daughter of the man listed at the owner. But she said they had sold the truck and it was no longer theirs. Asked when the sale took place, she hung up.

No I.D., little luggage. At least the local sheriff called them illegals - more than national news will ever do. But you have to believe that this is really all being reported incorrectly. Big Janet said they were all self-deporting and no longer a problem so they must have really been driving back toward the border and not toward Houston as reported.

“I’ve seen people with pickups packed so high, the junk in the back nearly hits the bottom of overpasses..Endangering all on the roads. Thank you government!”

Unless you’re speaking about our almost non-existant border, you’re looking at it the wrong way. We SHOULD thank government for standing out of the peoples’ way, even if some do act foolishly.

Just because a few idiots improperly loaded a pickup doesn’t mean the government should be running checkpoints to measure everyone’s load. The same way the government shouldn’t confiscate all guns because some idiot thinks he’s The Joker. Yes, those are brutal costs of freedom placed on some people. But a nanny-state will cost EVERYONE much, much more than we can begin to imagine…

Less government = less corruption = more freedom = more prosperity for all

Period.

Lefties care so much about the environment and lives, but won't do what it takes to curb the destruction and dying:

Amen to that. I wonder how many forked over good money to have “reliable” transportation to bring them to houston, or whereever their destinantion was.

Well they do, but only for illegals entering illegally by the millions.

You on the other hand are totally regulated, taxed and controlled.

This is typical of the chaos created when government rolls out the red carpet for millions of illegal, while offering them coupons, free med care, prizes, welfare etc, etc, etc.

They ALL forked over “good money” to come to America. They were lied to and robbed. And God help the nasty people who make money from the Innocents!

Like those that died in a locked trailer near Victoria and those that died in a railcar in West Texas.
No fan of illegal immigration, no fan by far, but it does run 2 ways.

Let me get this straight Tex, are you suggesting they crossed the Texas border in a pickup truck packed with 27 people in it?

Is this what is being reported?

I have heard/read of so many illegals, dying to get to freedom....but I also know of many who come here to make mischief, and because of their criminal backgrounds, they survive.

Any way you look at it, it is a disgrace. For all countries involved.

How do you know this? Many enter illegally and don't pay a dime to anyone.

In fact, if they are all here illegally, are they not robbing, breaking our laws, and lying, while disrespecting our rules, sovereignty and laws?

Can not disagree.
Don’t want to see amnesty, ever, but an Ellis Island approach may work for the people trying to better their families.
You still run the risk of bad people coming in, but it has to be better than just the Feds ignoring current laws. No good answers here.

Bad people show up and destroy while good people can die in the desert.

I don’t think anyone could like either scenario.

Uh, I did read the article, and it did not say they crossed the border, over 100+ miles away, with a pickup truck packed with 24 people. The article never mentioned that.

In fact, do you believe they crossed the border check point in Nuevo Laredo with 24 people jammed into a pickup?

Correct on all points.No doubt.
But why are we all or nothing?
If my family lived south of the border, and were forced to dodge drug lord gunfire, and eat dirt sandwiches, I’d do anything possible to give them a better life, including smuggle them in to “the last, best hope on earth”.
We have made it impossible for the average (poor) immigrant to come here, taking 2 to 10 years for them to do so, at a high cost,5 figures, gennerally.
Again, I do not want amnesty, I only want the Immigration Department to join the rest of us in the 21st century and use tools such as the internet/finger prints, etc. to bring good people to citizenship. We did it with all the arrivals at Ellis Island, etc.
Should we allow Coyotes and people like that to dictate what we do now?
Let those here now illegally go through that same process, but let’s bring the process up to date.
Feds aren’t tryng to stop them, only give them “amnesty” which is very wrong as well.

Most likely not. They probably agreed to meet some one at at given spot.
