You have gangs because drugs are illegal and in high demand and are therefore very profitable. Take away the excess profits by decriminalizing drugs and the gangs have no incentive to deal in drugs. What we have today is not much different than Prohibition.
No, legalization will open the door to legal competition and send profits plummeting, thus effectively putting an end to drug cartels - just as happened to rumrunners when we wisely ended Prohibition of the drug alcohol.
You’re right. History shows that that’s exactly what would happen. Look at the bloody turf wars we have today between Miller and Coors and between Jack Daniels and Jim Beam. Things were much better when alcohol was illegal and gangsters like Al Capone and Joe Kennedy controlled the sale of that intoxicant.
