INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA has removed one of the prestigious awards it bestowed on former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.
NCAA general counsel and vice president of legal affairs Donald Remy confirmed after today's news conference announcing sanctions against Penn State that it rescinded the Gerald R. Ford Award it gave to Paterno at its convention on Jan. 13, 2011.
"The Ford Award will be taken away," Remy said.
The award is named in recognition of former president Gerald Ford and honors an individual who has provided significant leadership as an advocate for college athletics throughout their career.
Former tennis great Billie Jean King and former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden are among the award's other recipients.
NCAA President Mark Emmert declined to talk specifically about Paterno in the news conference.
JoePa[thetic] will primarily be remembered as being Jerry Sandusky's top advocate for 15 years or more! (By "advocate" I mean it in the same way "advocate" is used for a defense attorney of somebody involved in a crime or misconduct)
Fact: JoePa was the HIGHEST paid employee at Penn State and was a personality 'god' there...(anything he said went)
Fact: AFTER grad student Mike McQueery became a child rapist eyewitness, JoePa elevated this child-rapist eyewitness Mike McQueery from grad student to wide receivers coach -- and then promoted him again as holding BOTH the WR coach position AND head of recruiting...these bought the continued silence of McQueery until he was brought before a grand jury.
Fact: JoePa (& other admins) covered up what he/they knew and utilized his/their power to bury eyewitness evidence for as long as possible, and failed to take steps to ensure that Sandusky didn't have continued open access to the Penn State campus.
No need to impose all of these sanctions they have imposed so far when only one is needed. Just force them to rename themselves, “Pedophile State University” and the rest will take care of itself.
The truth and justice for all those innocent boys have been delayed decades but it may have never seen the light of day except for the long overdue testimony of Michael McQueery and the courage of the victims to testify in public.
McQueery is an ironic name.

What more can they do to Paterno? They already moved his statue from in front of the stadium and put it in the locker room shower.
Maybe this action will inspire the Nobel committee to take Oblunder’s peace prize back.
Paterno donated massive amounts of money back to the university in the form of buildings and other things named after him.
I fully agree his name should be removed from those buildings.
I think the names of Sandusky’s victims should be put on them instead.

I didn't expect, based upon reading several State College newspaper articles NOT linked on FR...that so many State College would reposition themselves as the so-called "victims"...never mind the REALvictims...and your comment goes right along with reinforcing that victim blindness...where you tout that whatever's happening to the Penn Staers is inquisition torture level...so by contast would you claim these rape victims whom you failed to mention were on some sort of "picnic" or something?

This is not a case where everyone is guilty of the sins of some sexual pervert homo loving, p.c. leaders. However, everyone was tolerating it. I have yet to see them admit that the homo activists in leadership made it dangerous to challenge gay acting out as pedophiles.
They need to get off the politically correct pervert train that got them into this hell hole and move on straight and honorable.

SPANIER CONTROLLED MILLIONS IN STATE AND FEDERAL EDUCATION GRANTS L/E needs to determine the extent of PS’s federal, state and local govt grants which emanate from an assortment of govt entities.....that might have covertly subsidized pedophile activities.
Besides the DOE, grants could have been issued by the EPA and DOJ for various campus projects——including monies private Foundations from a variety of private charitable organizations AND funding from more traditional sources, such as corporate and private foundations. The majority of attention given to today’s Freeh Report has centered on figuring out Joe Paterno’s role in allowing Jerry Sandusky to go unstopped. But the most actively nefarious character—other than Sandusky himself—in the commission’s story is former university president Graham Spanier. Even before today’s news, experts had suggested that Spanier’s actions could be brought before a grand jury. Here are ten of the more reprehensible plot points from the Freeh Report, many of which support the notion that he could face criminal charges:
<><> Testifying to the 2001 grand jury he was unaware of the 1998 investigation against Sandusky, even though emails from 1998 show him discussing the investigation with athletic director Tim Curley and university vice president Gary Schultz.
<><> Repeating this claim to the Special Investigative Counsel, and stating he “never heard a report from anyone” that Sandusky was abusing children.
<><> Failing to notify the Board of Trustees that an investigation of a prominent assistant football coach was underway, withholding this information from them even while the board was considering (and approving) a favorable land deal between the university and Sandusky’s Second Mile charity.
<><>Approving and pushing for Sandusky’s emeritus rank—and the facility access privileges that came along with it— despite Sandusky not qualifying for it by the established academic rules.
<><>Declaring Curley’s plan to suggest Sandusky stop hanging around children, without actual sanctions, to be “a humane approach” rather than contacting outside authorities to investigate suspected abuse.
<><>Telling the Special Investigative Counsel his first knowledge of the 1998 incident came at the April 2011 grand jury appearance, when notes from his Attorney General interview a month prior reveal he was questioned about it then.
<><> Approving an unprecedented $168,000 lump-sum retirement payment to Sandusky in 1999.
<><> Showing no interest in identifying the child involved in the 2001 incident or ascertaining whether or not a crime had occurred.
<><> Opposing any and all independent investigations into Sandusky’s behavior.
<><> Modifying the November 2011 Board of Trustees statement without their knowledge or approval, asserting that Curley and Schultz requested administrative leave rather than that the board had actually decided to place them on leave.

I have a feeling that Penn State was so willing to go along with the findings of the Freeh Report and the NCAA punishment, because there’s stuff a lot worse out there that wasn’t covered in it.

The total acceptance of any and all penalties without so much as a whisper of appeal or challenge seems like a "make it go away ASAP before the really bad stuff comes out" gambit.

No — that would be Graham Spanier, the homosexuality-friendly” President of Penn State University from 1995 to 2011, the years of Sandusky’s escapades. You remember him: here from Wikipedia:
A Phoenix private investigator named Paul McLaughlin came forward in the wake of the Sandusky revelations. He charged in the early 2000s Spanier and others at Penn State rebuffed his efforts to report his own sexual abuse. McLaughlin charged he was sexually abused as an 11-year-old in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He named, among others, PSU education professor John T. Neisworth.
McLaughlin secretly taped a telephone conversation with Neisworth which contains a purported confession. He said Spanier responded “Don’t bother” when McLaughlin offered to send him the tape. McLaughlin states his conversation with Spanier occurred in March, 2002 days before the alleged Sandusky rape. “Neisworth retired in 2002, though he continued teaching a distance-education course for a few more years,” was reported in the New York Times.

I saw another article that said the NCAA was considering a 4-year ban on all football related activities. I think the choice Penn State had was accept Emmert’s sanctions or go the long drawn out route and try and stop the NCAA from giving them a four (or more) year ban.
I also saw another article that said coach O’Brien asked his bosses to take any punishment that allowed them to continue to play and continue to be on TV.
I think the current management at Penn State is going to do whatever it takes to put this behind them. I would like to see second mile investigated too and I am still waiting for Spanier’s “perp walk.’
