MILFORD -- A naked intruder shot by a homeowner who said he was protecting himself after a struggle with the man was apprehended by police after he waded into the water behind the man's house on Point Lookout, police said.

The man, Benjamin Prue, 25, of North Carolina, was captured in knee-deep water and was brought to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he remains in critical condition following a second surgery for a bullet wound in his chest.

Police Chief Keith Mello said the homeowner, Gerald Mirto, 67, shot Prue following a struggle on his back porch. After Prue was shot, Mello said he walked in the surf behind the house.

Prue will be charged with second-degree assault on a person over 60, home invasion, first-degree burglary and criminal mischief, Mello said.

According to Mello, at about 10 p.m. Mirto, who was alone in the large house, heard a noise and went to investigate. He was confronted in his living room by Prue, who was naked.

The two men struggled on the back porch, Mello said. During the struggle he said Prue bit Mirto several times on the arms and hit him on the side of the head.

At some point Mello said Mirto managed to break free and ran upstairs to call 911.

Well in the Obama economy sometimes you have to make some hard choices. Spend money on food or spend it on clothes.

second-degree assault on a person over 60

Is that a different crime from second-degree assault on a person aged 59 ?

Snorting or shooting “bath salts” causes the core body temperature to spike up resulting in the shedding of clothing. It also causes delusional biting behavior.

Q: How do you tell the difference between a real zombie and a druggie high on salts?

A:Zombies leave their clothes on.

WOW that first sentence is a killer. “He” could mean the intruder, the victim, the LEO. Just guess at who really did what.

I’m sad that this happened in my neighborhood, but happy Mr. Mirto sent the right message.

I am woefully uninformed about zombies. If not for FR I would never get educated on them! Thank you!
