This Wasn't Supposed to Happen: Gun Sales Jump in Colorado

RUSH: This wasn't supposed to happen. "Firearms sales are surging in the wake of the Colorado movie theater massacre as buyers express fears that anti-gun politicians may use the shootings to seek new restrictions on owning weapons. In Colorado, the site of Friday's shooting that killed 12 and injured dozens of others, gun sales jumped in the three days that followed. The state approved background checks for 2,887 people who wanted to purchase a firearm -- 25 percent more than the average Friday to Sunday period in 2012 and 43 percent more than the same interval the week prior."

This is not supposed to happen. The media and the rest of the Democrat Party are supposed to be able to use tragedies like the Aurora shooting to discourage people from owning guns. And, furthermore, they're supposed to be able to use tragedies like the Aurora shooting to get people to join them in the media, the Democrat Party, for more gun control. But instead, the event itself is having the opposite effect. The AP is appalled. You can hear the fury when you read the copy in the story. This is not supposed to happen.

"Dick Rutan, owner of Gunners Den in suburban Arvada, Colo., said requests for concealed-weapon training certification 'are off the hook.' ... 'What they're saying is: They want to have a chance. They want to have the ability to protect themselves...'" You know, Obama the other day said, "Yeah, my daughters, they go to movies. What if they'd been in that theater?" Well, let me answer that. If Obama's daughters had been in the theater, there would have been Secret Service agents in there. At the first sign this guy pulled a weapon he'd-a been dropped by the Secret Service. The results would have been quite different.

I'm not advocating that people take weapons. I'm just saying had there been anybody in that theater with a gun, they'd have been able to stop this guy on this rampage. So if Obama's daughters had been in there, there'd have been Secret Service agents in there and this guy starts lighting the place up, the Secret Service agents take him out. That's what would happen, and that is why there is increased sales of guns. It's like the famous rapper Ice-T said yesterday on this program. It's the last defense against tyranny. The only reason you have guns is to protect yourself against the police, he said. (laughing) He did, the well-known rapper Ice-T.

AP says that firearm sales are surging because buyers fear that anti-gun politicians may use the shootings to seek new restrictions on owning weapons. That's a very reasonable fear. But I suspect a bigger factor is that people see things like this latest massacre and realize they can't count on the police to protect them from the lunatics and the criminals. Nobody can do anything until after the crime has occurred. But the AP did find the gun guy, Dick Rutan, saying that people want the ability to protect themselves and their families if they're in a situation like this. Imagine wanting to be able to defend yourself and your family from lunatics and criminals. I'm sure the AP sees that as silly and paranoid. But still they do.

You made the right choice. A .45 will stop an aggressor w only one shot.

And there are those who think that Obama is not the best salesman for sidearms and personal protection in America.

James Holmes is certainly a rising star in that department. Unfortunately, after the first big surge in sales, he may fall off sharply, in just a short while...

Still, Holmes had access to some of his gear, that is not normally available to those outside formal law enforcement or even military supply channels.

Was there some kind of clandestine network that was getting all this stuff to him outside normal legal channels? You know, the “Fast & Furious” ruse kind of went bust as a ploy to convince people that personal sidearms are being trafficked illegally, maybe this was just another application of that same kind of false flag to convince the American public that even after all the previous attempts, sidearms are not yet sufficiently regulated.

A fine choice IMO. I prefer the way it feels in my hand over the Glock.

What gear did he have that is not available legally to regular citizens in Colorado?

The only thing I can think of might be the gas canisters if they were in fact tear gas and not smoke canisters.

(Article) At the first sign this guy pulled a weapon he'd [have] been dropped by the Secret Service. The results would have been quite different.

Friday one of the Aurora PD spokesmen was laying it down that Holmes was so heavily protected, that even a person with a pistol couldn't have stopped him. He was perhaps thinking of that infamous shootout in S. California years ago with the bank robbers who were all dressed out like tanks -- who died anyway.

But it's a debatable opinion. One to the head stops anyone -- and even with a Kevlar helmet on, he'd have been vulnerable like our troops were, in 2003, to stay-behind Mukhabarat and Special Republican Guards assassins who attacked sentries and guards with small pistols, shooting them in the back of the neck.

Interesting. It is my understanding the only thing on his head was a gas mask (non-bullet proof).

He was also not a big guy, and a foot pound is a foot pound. Even if there was no penetration, getting hit by a medium size pistol round must feel like getting hit by a hammer. Hit him in the nuts or neck, and I bet he slows down a lot, even with body armor.

Sign for front and back doors:

Criminal, this door is locked to protect you, not me. If you break it down, you’ll WISH I called the cops.

Don’t forget he was supposed filled with painkillers so the impact of a bullet on body armor would have been unlikely to stop him.

But even a .22lr in the head has a way of getting attention.

Go for the murderers’ weak points !

We do not yet have full details on how the booby traps that were rigged in his apartment were set (and we might not ever get them), but access to explosive materials, while not entirely impossible, has become much more difficult since the Oklahoma City bombing. Clearly, he did not use ANFO, but other highly destructive materials were in place, and it is fortunate these were not activated.

Technically, the AR-15 rifle and the drum-type magazine are legal for civilians to acquire in Colorado, as is the battle armor. And the canisters, so far as may be determined, were not tear gas, else the patrons of the movie house would have much more incapacitated than they were, and there were no reports of anybody being treated for the effects of tear gas or other highly irritant inhaled substances.

This was a highly planned and detailed operation. Perhaps it was sufficient to say one person COULD have done it all, but there is plenty of reason to consider that other persons or agencies expedited the acquisition and placement of the hardware used. And that is where this whole operation becomes just a little creepy. “Regular citizens” do not plan massacres. But a devotee of the “Occupy Black Bloc” operation surely could.

Anarchy is an ugly fact to have to live with.

Not true for SS and FBI agents in top form...

I read here on FR a few years ago about two plain clothes FBI agents sitting in an unmarked car on stake - out...

Some miscreant tried to car jack the two feds...

big mistake...

one of the feds shot the guys neck by the main artery....

then proceeded to pump the guys chest to revive him...

net result was his blood got pumped out.

and dead on arrival at the ER

Yeah, a Kevlar helmet will protect you from death, but it’ll knock the absolute hell out of you, likely into unconsciousness.

There was a thread here yesterday or Monday with comments from the company he bought the vest from.

It was a tactical vest - no armor. Just a vest with lots of pockets.

“...Even if there was no penetration, getting hit by a medium size pistol round must feel like getting hit by a hammer....”

A friend of mine was a sheriff deputy a few years back and was in excellent physical condition. He responded to a burglary one night and was shot in the chest with a .38 Special from about 10’ away. He was wearing his vest and it saved his life. The 158gr. bullet literally knocked the wind out of him setting him back quite a bit. He said it felt as if he were hit by a sledgehammer. He showed me his chest the next week and there was a deep black & blue bruise mark larger than a softball where the bullet had hit. Even if this loser was pumped up on drugs, a 230gr. 45 round anywhere to the major body mass would have knocked him over and maybe even stopped him in his tracks.
