If I remember correctly, the AR-15 was first introduced to the armed forces by General Curtis Lemay for use on Air Force base security. Right back around 1964, I think.

My rifle in Army basic was also an AR15.

My first issued rifle was an AR15 in 1989 (lower receiver, anyway--Army, Ft. Leonard Wood). Worked fine.
