Rep. Pelosi praises progress, warns against complacency in fighting AIDS

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Friday urged a greater commitment to the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Speaking before the International AIDS Conference in Washington, D.C., the California Democrat said recent successes in combating the disease are welcome but shouldn't lead the world's governments to curtail their search for a cure.
"Where there is scientific opportunity, there is a moral obligation to fund it," Pelosi said. "Where there are people in need of drugs and care – and communities in need of prevention – we have a moral obligation to provide it. And where there is discrimination, we have a moral obligation to continue to fight it."
The five-day conference — attended by thousands of scientists, researchers and healthcare advocates spanning the globe — featured a number of prominent figures and policymakers worldwide.
On Monday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton used the forum to announce that the United States would provide $150 million in new funding for global efforts against AIDS.
On Thursday, Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese Nobel Peace laureate, addressed the crowd by video, followed immediately by former first lady Laura Bush, who emphasized the importance of women in the fight against the disease.
“When you look around the world, you see that women are in the forefront of life changing progress,” Bush said.
Bill Gates and former President Clinton also spoke at the event.
The convention is being held amid a flurry of encouraging developments in the decades-old battle against HIV/AIDS.
This summer alone, the Food and Drug Administration approved a drug that's shown promise in preventing healthy people from contracting the disease, as well as the first over-the-counter AIDS test that allows patients to screen for the virus in their own homes.
Pelosi cheered the progress but challenged policymakers to stay on the offensive.
"This optimism must not make us complacent," she said. "Even in difficult fiscal times, cutting back on our HIV/AIDS investments is a false economy that costs us more in the future.
"HIV/AIDS is still adapting," she added. "So must we."
That is what is important to this idiot?

1. There is no moral obligation to fund scientific research. Yes, if the private money is there to further R&D, I'm good. I'm sorta okay with NASA. I'm also okay with some funding of research for cures, as long as there is over-sight and accountability.

My father died of AIDS and while it is a horrible disease, it was his own choices that led him to catch it.
That said, there ARE some innocent victims (children, faithful spouses) who acquire AIDS I still do not believe we need to fund it. Pay for results not research.
Cost to support a child to independence is $160,000 and more if you are a 1 per center. Tax them an additional 25% of gross since they do not procreate and contribute to the next generation and quadruple the social security tax for the same reasons. Right now gay couples are getting a free ride.
Yeah, you can marry. Society will gladly accept your much needed tax contributions to offset your cost to society at large.
Cigarettes are taxed at a level that funds the disease it sparks.
Gays can marry and self identify for this tax.
I suspect the closets would fill up again and nothing more would be heard of this Gay Marriage proposal ever again.

So there's a moral obligation to fund anything that will save butt boys and drug users, but women have the "right" to murder their own children and there's no moral obligation to save the millions of children abortion factories sacrifice to the god Moloch?
It'll be interesting to see just how well Nancy gets along with the new Archbishop of San Francisco, Salvatore Cordileone. To date he hasn't been the sort of guy to coddle Cafeteria Catholics or to have queers thanking for his understanding the way the rainbow faggo crowd thanked Niederauer on several occasions.

Every virus you've ever contracted has left a gift for you. It's called an ANTIBODY. The test is a fraud. It only tests for the presence of antibodies. You might have come in contact with an HIV retrovirus 10 years ago. You're not sick, you weren't sick them. But boy, NOW you're REALLY sick. The test was positive!!!!! You're going to die!!!!! The Socialist thinks that government can fulfill all needs regardless of cost because government has endless supplies of money. The Socialist as a child does has no thought of the consequences of spending all of the available funds with out the thought of unforeseen future need or of all of the already incurred expenses that must be paid. No the Socialist like a child only sees what it wants and KNOWS that the government must provide that want.
