Olympics: Call For New Rules On Empty Seats

The sight of rows of empty seats at some Olympic venues on the first full day of the Games prompts a fierce debate.

The head of the British Olympic Association has called for new measures to avoid swathes of empty seats at some of the most popular events during the London Games.

Lord Moynihan wants to bring in a 30-minute rule on ticketing so that people who fail to turn up on time lose their seats.

"We need every seat filled," he said. "We owe it to the team, we owe it to British sports fans the length and breadth of he country."

Games boss Lord Coe has urged for the seating row to be kept in perspective, saying it was early days and steps could be taken to tackle the problem.

He also insisted it was wrong to blame sponsors as they only accounted for 8% of tickets, while 75% were in the hands of the public.

When something doesn’t go according to plan, there’s always a bureaucrat waiting in the wings to enact some sort of “rule.”

Each seat should be fitted with auto-inflatable blow-up dolls, activated by lack of weight on an empty seat a few minutes before the events start.

not really, they had a long time to sell those lower more expensive seats and to figure out what to do if they weren’t selling.
again, i don’t think the average UK citizen is interested in the sporting events even the most popular ones (swimming/gymnastics). Most of the stadium left after the opening ceremony show when the parade of nation’s started. It was pathetic and disrespectful.

What are the ticket prices? Are people buying them and not showing up? Or are people just not buying them?

Poor planing because they just didn’t care enough. The UK acts as if they just got the nod to put on the Olympics last week. They had plenty of time to figure out this stuff.

Maybe they can fill those seats with nurses from the NHS.

Seats are empty? No problem, we’ll prevent people from coming in if they arrive too late.

Liberal “logic” at work.

Breaking news in the UK. No one has any money. Even Premier League games have empty seats.

Its just the socialist system in action.

I guess Romney did not know what he was talking about regarding Britain’s ability to run the Olympics.

Look for the Olympics to go the way of a good general and just fade away.

My thoughts also. In my opinion the Olympics is just an exercise in political one-up-man-ship. They rip off the youth of the world every two years, and give them colored trinkets to hang around their necks, while the political big wigs rake in millions for themselves.

but it appears mitt was right after all...they weren't ready, they aren't supporting it with the empty seat...and the socialistic theme of the opening really really sucked!

Doubly so for the first round.

I wonder how much of the problem is whether ticket are sold as blocks, so if you want to see the finals for an event you have to buy tickets for preliminaries, quarterfinals and semifinals like being stuck buying full price preseason NFL tickets if you want season tickets.

“I watched men’s gymnastics last night, and was surprised to see an entire section of prime seats empty.”

I noticed that, too, and was wondering what the hell was going on.

>>I guess Romney did not know what he was talking about regarding Britain’s ability to run the Olympics.<<

And Romney wasn’t even criticizing the Brits. All he did was point out the already-acknowledged problems (the difficulty they were having arranging security, and the threatened shutdown of public transit.)

Yet he’s treated (by the Left, of course) as though he’s just dissed the Queen at a private audience.

Well, now they’ve got bigger things to criticize, no? Maybe they’ll go find Romney and see if he finds anything “disconcerting” about tons of empty prime seats. Given his business acumen, I’m betting he finds it more than just “disconcerting”—more like stupid planning, like was going on in Salt Lake City before he straightened them out.

Haven’t heard much of that from the MSM lately though, have we? A reasonable reporter would be interviewing Romney for his thoughts on the matter and seriously considering any advice he might offer, given that Romney’s successfully brought one of these off in the past, but it seems like “reasonable reporters” are in short supply these days.
