As Hialeah absentee-ballot probe continues, voter regrets accepting help

Matilde Galindo, who is 75 and illiterate, has no clue who she voted for last week.

She said that late in June, Daisy Cabrera, an acquaintance of a distant relative, offered to help her register as a Miami-Dade County voter. Then, on July 22, Cabrera dropped by the Hialeah home that Galindo shares with her husband, Basilio, 78.

“She filled out the ballot and asked me to sign it,” Galindo said Saturday. “On that long ballot, she made little marks and told me, ‘This one and this one, that’s how you should vote.’ ”

Galindo and her husband said they told Cabrera they wanted to vote for the Republican Party. But they don’t know a single candidate for county mayor, the School Board or the state Legislature.

“I don’t know. She chose them all,” Galindo said, adding that Cabrera took the ballot when she left.

Authorities are investigating Cabrera, 56, after finding her in possession of dozens of absentee ballots last week in Hialeah. It is the first case of its kind since a new county ordinance took effect this month that makes it a misdemeanor to possess two or more ballots belonging to someone else.

Voting never gets old for these centenarians (Volunteer follows League of Women Voter's Guide) ..........."Ida Silverstein, a volunteer at Seven Acres for the past 15 years, helps residents vote, although she hastens to add that she cannot advise them how to vote or tell them how she plans to vote. Her assistance is limited to explaining the process and reading the ballot for them line by line, which can get a bit tedious when judicial candidates and other less familiar officeholders are up for election. She relies on the League of Women Voters Guide for answers to any questions the residents may have.

"It's much easier when they want to vote straight ticket," Silverstein said."....

Romney seeks Virginia voter form probe "Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign is asking Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to investigate voter registration forms sent to dogs, children and dead people, but the tea party favorite’s office says he lacks the power and a voting rights group is accusing the campaign of peddling “blatantly false” accusations."....

It’s critical that conservatives get involved in their local town and county politics. You can then do things like this: “a new county ordinance took effect this month that makes it a misdemeanor to possess two or more ballots belonging to someone else.”

You can lock up rat operatives and traitors. Taking back your neighbothoods from rats is the key to taking back the country. That’s the strategy the Founders used to throw out the Tories.

One of the voters she has helped is Raúl Coto, 50. He said they met at a political event in Hialeah and that Cabrera offered to take his absentee ballot to the post office. Coto accepted.

“The lady did me the favor because I don’t have the time,” said Coto, who is unemployed.

I love that line. Unemployed and no time to turn in his ballot.

There is something very wrong when illiterate people who do not speak English can become citizens. I know that part of Miami - it is not believable - whole neighborhoods where no one speaks English, where they are amazed to see an Anglo in their midsts. And more and more just keep coming. They buy cars, etc but live in their own closed world.

The absentee, mail-in voting process is tailor-made to facilitate vote fraud and vote buying.

Next time, the person will just immediately mail the ballot after getting it and filling it out, and thus will not be in possession of more than one at any time.

nursing homes and assisted living facilities are a MAJOR source of absentee ballot fraud. The ballots are filled out to the letter of the law. It is just the voter who is not actually voting. Some of those people have even been adjudicated incompetent.

It was in the movie Pulp Fiction (and its soundtrack), so the song is well known by many thirtysomethings.
