Al-Qaida turns tide for rebels in battle for eastern Syria

These are not average members of the Free Syrian Army. Abu Khuder and his men fight for al-Qaida. They are one of a number of jihadi organisations establishing a foothold in the east of the country.

They hide their presence. "Some people are worried about carrying the [black] flags," said Abu Khuder. "They fear America will come and fight us. So we fight in secret. Why give Bashar and the west a pretext?" But their existence is common knowledge in Mohassen.

According to Abu Khuder, his men are working closely with the military council that commands the Free Syrian Army brigades in the region. "We meet almost every day," he said. "We have clear instructions from our [al-Qaida] leadership that if the FSA need our help we should give it. We help them with IEDs and car bombs. Our main talent is in the bombing operations." Abu Khuder's men had a lot of experience in bomb-making from Iraq and elsewhere, he added.

"Al-Qaida has experience in these military activities and it knows how to deal with it."

Abu Khuder pledged allegiance to al-Qaida's organisation in Syria, the Jabhat al Nusra or Solidarity Front. He let his beard grow and adopted the religious rhetoric of a jihadi, becoming a commander of one their battalions.

At this, one man in the room – an activist in his mid-30s who did not want to be named – said: "So what are you trying to do, Abu Khuder? Are you going to start cutting off hands and make us like Saudi? Is this why we are fighting a revolution?"

"[Al-Qaida's] goal is establishing an Islamic state and not a Syrian state," he replied. "Those who fear the organisation fear the implementation of Allah's jurisdiction. If you don't commit sins there is nothing to fear."

Syria is doomed to fall.

The Islamics will start a killing spree unrivaled for years when it does.

If any Christians have a chance to get out they should take it now.

“The Islamics will start a killing spree unrivaled for years when it does.”

You mean Hitlery Clinton and the media whores were wrong when they told us Assad’s opponents were freedom fighters and the good guys? More Arab Spring?

“If any Christians have a chance to get out they should take it now.”

Let them that have ears, hear.

I think we should supply arms to both sides and let them slug it out for a couple of years...

Funny how the victors of the Arab Spring turn out to be just as bad, if not worse than, the regimes they replace.

I can't make sense of any of this anymore. So instead of a rabbit with a pancake on it's head, here's Sponge Bob.

The Christians in the Middle East should move en masse to Lebanon and try to re-establish their majority. Also, I know that Israel wishes to be exclusively Jewish but they would be well advised to start distinguishing between Christian and Muslim Arabs. A large Christian Arab minority in Israel would be quite a different thing than a large Muslim Arab minority, especially refugees that would be filled with gratitude for escaping the Muslims elsewhere rather than one trained with years of Palestinian nationalism.

Al-Qaida is and always has been Muslim Brother Front group.

Al-Qaida tolerated a truce with the secular Dictatorships in the Middle East like Syria, Libya and Iraq because those countries provided logistical support for international terrorism to Al-Qaida that they could not get anywhere else.

Furthermore, Al-Qaida had little or no support from from the populations of those countries because, up until recently, those people were wise enough to understand the danger of putting radical fundamentalist in power, so there was little internal popular support for Al-Qaida.

On it's own Al-Qaida was too weak to overthrow an established government, as they discovered in Egypt when they assassinated Sadat and tried to take control of the country.

Things have changed in the Middle East.

The unrest in countries like Syria, Libya, Egypt has allowed the Muslim Brotherhood and Al-Qaida to hide their true intentions and pose as populist democratic reformers to lull the populations.

At the same time, the MB is using their existing organizational structure, their Al-Qaida military muscle, their access to pretty much unlimited financial resources and their help from powerful players outside the country, including the Obama Administration, to dominate the political scene and eliminate rivals.

Once in power, they show their true colors and abandon all pretense at democracy or rule of law, and consolidate power around an Iran style theocratic Dictatorship and begin to use the country a staging ground for international terrorism. Amazingly, the Obama Administration is actively helping them accomplish their take over of these countries while encouraging a wolf in sheep's clothing media propaganda blitz portraying the MB as the face of moderate democratic progress in the region.

After ten years of bitter world wide fighting with the MB's Al-Qaida front group and massive intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan the US is, at the direction of our President, using it's diplomatic, military and financial assets to actively help the MB and it's Al-Qaida proxy warriors to overthrow and depose the current leadership in critical Middle East States.

In doing so we are betraying both our friends in the region and and our enemies who were foolish enough to cooperate with the US in the Global War on Terrorism, and handing Al-Qaida the keys to the kingdoms on a silver platter. They must be stunned at both their good fortune and and how easily we have been fooled into assisting them in taking over countries they never could have overthrown on their own.

By both our willful action and our willful inaction, we have literally delivered those critical strategic countries into the hands of our common enemy, Al-Qaida. The current new radical leadership has no solutions to the underlying unsolved problems nor any real interest in solving those problems. In fact their true intention is to use the hopelessness, misery and despair to generate hate, envy and anger in the people and channel those emotions to mobilize the populations to further their agenda world wide.

In retrospect, we will probably learn that much of unrest that gave rise to the "Arab Spring" was fomented and led by MB outsiders and their domestic allies and useful idiots in those countries and financed by MB money from outside the countries. Depressingly, substantial amount of the money used to finance the revolutions came from the billions of dollars of US foreign aid sends to the region each year.

But by the time our sleep walking American public wakes up to the reality that we have been conned by the MB and mislead by our leaders and their allies in the media with disastrous consequences, it will be too late to intervene to set things right and stop the melt down in the region.

We are going to pay a heavy price for ill advised 'Arab Spring' policies and actions in the Middle East when the region first implodes, then explodes and the dominoes start falling

Can't figure the end game. Putting MB and AQ in power in Egypt and Lybia, Iraq and Afghanistan staring into the abyss. Pitting AQ and MB against Alawite/ Shiite in Syria , to drag in Hezbollah and Iran?

I think they are trying to spark an Israeli / Iranian war and MB and AQ will pick up all the marbles when the smoke clears.

Either that or they just have no clue.
