Mitt Romney Lavishes Praise On Israel's Socialist, Government Controlled Healthcare System
Forbes ^ | 30 July 2012 | Rick Ungar

Mitt Romney seems to be laboring under the impression that whatever he says in a foreign country will—like a weekend in Las Vegas—somehow stay in that foreign country.

Either that or he figures nobody back home is paying any attention.

Speaking today to a small group of Israeli contributors to his campaign, the GOP presidential candidate—and supposed sworn enemy of government controlled healthcare—had kind words for the success of Israel’s healthcare system.

"When our health care costs are completely out of control. Do you realize what health care spending is as a percentage of the GDP in Israel? 8 percent. You spend 8 percent of GDP on health care. And you’re a pretty healthy nation”

A healthy nation, indeed.

With a life-expectancy rate that is the 4th best in the world (the United States is 38th) and a reputation for delivering high-quality care to all of its citizens by utilizing the most advanced medical technology available in a hospital system we can only envy from afar, Governor Romney is right to be impressed with the Israelis’ ability to deliver excellent care while keeping spending down to 8 percent of GDP as compared to 18 percent here in the United States.

If only Romney’s appreciation of Israel’s success did not fly smack in the face of his constant, ideologically based rhetoric guaranteed to insure that only the wealthiest Americans get a taste of the healthcare Israelis receive as their birthright.

So, if Israel spends 8% of it’s GDP on healthcare and their yearly GDP is aprox. 243 billion (2011) then they are spending about 19-20 billion per year on medical care. The US is subsidizing about 16-17% of Israel’s healthcare.(That 3.1 billion would have to come out of Israel’s pocket if we didn’t give it). Also what is the amount of importation of pharmaceuticals and medical devices into Israel from the US and at what price? Is it similar to the deal most European countries get where the US citizen pays via cost-shifting the low cost of said drugs and devices to said countries?

Didn’t he say he would get rid of the Obamacare.

Yes, but his surrogates, including Pam Bondi have stated publicly that there are certain parts of ObamaCare that they would like to keep and that they would be only too happy to replace it with some sort of RomneyCare in all 50 states.

In 2009, I was in a Tel Aviv hospital and it was not all it’s cracked up to be. Particularly, the totally indifferent staff. A nurse accidentally missed my vein for the saline solution and my arm blew up like Popeye’s. It took about 8 hours for someone to recognized their was a problem (after I kept telling people there was). I got more attention from the hospital liason to the insurance company (she wanted to make sure I could pay).

This is how Unger describes himself:

So when did FR become so enamored of critics on the left?

Irrelevant. Conveniently omitted is the fact that the collective genetic makeup of the US population is far different from that of Israel, not to mention the deviation in environment, workforce, food, etc.

Regarding HMO choices, how many options exist for the citizens of a given state? 2, 3, 5?

We’re flattered by the Israeli chicks that reveal their obligatory military service bikini clad, but are aghast at the thought of similar obligations concerning health care...

Let’s cut the crap. Israel is not the U.S. Comparative judgement is asinine.

This guy is amazing. The way he double talks never ends. If he keeps this up, we will be stuck with the Marxist Muslim for the next four years.

There must be a powerful cadre of leftists who helped kill the conservative contenders and put this guy in the running to assure their agenda is promulgated regardless of who wins.

It’s amazing to watch the new generation fret over the staggering cost of health care.

If they could only go back in time with us older people who remember when health care WAS AFFORDABLE before the days of the “deep pocket” health insurance companies.

Gee! I can’t imagine how it was affordable BEFORE health insurance but out of control AFTER the health insurance companies (with their deep pockets thanks to you and I) created a cornucopia of endless medical charges for the medical industry to feast upon.

The two laws of business were thrown out of whack by the insurance industry: “The laws of supply and demand” and “whatever the market will bear.” With insurance, there is no longer any market forces in place.

I love how people twist themselves into knots making excuse after excuse for Romney.

My days of voting for these political insiders and private party club members are way over.

The biggest difference of all between the two systems is that in the US those that can pay end up paying for those that can't/won't pay. In Israel it is mandatory that you pay in to the system, even if you don't have a job. In the US, fees for healthcare end up getting raised to cover the costs for those that don't pay their bills.

Israel does not have the problem of tens of millions of illegal people in their country because they are concerned about people trying to kill them so they actually enforce their borders.
