New Delhi (CNN) -- India suffered its second huge, crippling power failure in two days on Tuesday, depriving as much as half of the vast and populous country of electricity and disrupting transport networks.

The first power grid collapse, on Monday, was the country's worst blackout in a decade. It affected seven states in northern India that are home to more than 350 million people.

But Tuesday's failure was even larger, hitting eastern and northeastern areas as well.

Both blackouts cut power in the Indian capital, New Delhi.

Likely, long term, this will spur India to upgrade, grid, distribution, generation and control systems. They are an emerging and intend to be a major manufacturing economy.

The only quick way is fossil fuels in competition with China and cooperation with Russia for energy.

India is already stepping up in maritime piracy suppression (with Russia and China) as US influence falls.

Look for rising prices in energy and raw materials commodities (Cu, Al, rare earths, etc.)

If India builds it, business will come.

Not to be adversarial NV, but business will not come - at leasr, non Indian business.
The regulatory hurdles to establishing a business in India by non Indians would make Stalin drool.

I tried - it was simply impossible.
India protects its own.

Future hell, I’ve had at least 8 different power outages this summer, one this morning from about 7 to 8 pm.

America’s future

We continue to shut down coal plants, and burn our food for fuel.

I really hope the grownups come home soon.

Are you taking about before the license raj or after? A lot of things have changed in recent times. India has actually been attracting foreign investment faster then any country in the world save for China.

Yup. Would be nice to have some adults in charge for a change huh. Do we (as a whole) really believe this won’t happen here? What do you suppose the percentage of people is that even have a clue as to how vulnerable we are in this respect? Too many concerned on how they are viewed on facebook or what snooki and jwow are up to. Sad, sad future lay ahead for this country if we don’t turn it around in Nov. And, will there really be adults in charge once uncle obie is in the unemployment line on 1/21/2013?

Helping keep mankind warm for 65 years.

Me too, or perhaps ISI is using the money we give them for more technological rather than explosive experiments. My tinfoil hat is warming up. Anyone else think this might be a dry run?

"“One-third of India’s households do not even have electricity to power a light bulb, according to last year’s census.”"

That means two-third does. Thats more then 820 million people. Nearly 3 times the US. India is actually well lit at night.
