I do not understand this. Why is it most americans would favor expansion of Medicare but not favor ObamaCare? Why didn’t Obama just try to expand Medicare instead of pushing on the rope of obamacare?

Because Obama [and the Dems in general] cared less about expanding coverage for the poor than they did about increasing government's influence on the private insurance market.
