Poverty across the planet will be virtually eliminated by 2030, with a rising middle class of some two billion people pushing for more rights and demanding more resources, the chief of the top U.S. intelligence analysis shop said Saturday.
If current trends continue, the 1 billion people who live on less than a dollar a day now will drop to half that number in roughly two decades, Christoper Kojm said.
"We see the rise of the global middle class going from one to two billion," Kojm said, in a preview of the National Intelligence Council's global forecast offered at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado.
"Even if some of the most dire predictions of economic upheaval" in the coming years prove accurate, the intelligence council still sees "several hundred million people...entering the middle class," Kojm said.

Somebody been hittin’ da happy smoke.
Yeah; the same bunch that said Iran stopped their nuclear arms program in 2003.
Poverty would be virtually eliminated in America if the government didn't keep moving the standard so that the bottom 10-15% in income are always defined as "poor."
They may want to take a look at our DEMOGRAPHICS.
We’re not exactly turning into the Sweden of 1980.
In a room full of millionaires..you can always find the bottom 10%
My sense is they know this is bunk.
But they’re afraid of Obama losing the election.
If Romney wins, a few years into his Presidency they can retract this assertion along the lines that it was predicated on The One’s omnipotent policies and since Romney screwed it all up, we’re doomed.
Poverty has been eliminated already. The New Deal and Great Society eradicated it. /sarc
On a high note, choco rations will also go from 20 to 25 grams a week. Doubleplusgood.
I don't see how, unless living in a "biodegradable" lean-to with no electricity or automobile, is re-defined as outside the poverty line.
That's where I expect the libs to take us between now and then unless they're stopped.
What it is they say about straight line projections?
Oh, yeah, that they’re hooey.
“Poverty across the planet will be virtually eliminated by 2030”
From Obama’s “national lack-of intelligence staff”
Bullcr*p.
While China and India grow, we are shrinking.
We will fall, if we do not turn this around.
It is time for China to shrink a bit, and America to grow.
Yes, and Capt. Kirk and Mr. Spock will be here to usher in a new era.
What is it with these people? Whereas I would love for this to be true, the bottom line is that if more people are born and want a piece of the pie, and already there are people who are getting no pie - or tiny slivers, you can’t fix that without making more pie. That means worldwide productivity has to go up.
You can’t increase world productivity when the ranks of those who feel entitled becomes a large percentage of the total. In that case, you would be asking one segment of the population to work harder - to create more pie - so that others who aren’t making pie can have a larger slice. At the same time, you are asking those who are making the pie to settle for smaller slices. That kind of approach and reasoning hasn’t worked very well anywhere its been tried.
Yes, my wife and I lived in Malaysia for five years, a few years ago. The middle class there already has a living standard about the equivalent of American living standards in the 1950s, I think. That means one car per family and kids studying hard and sometimes working part-time to add to family income.
The drivers of the move to middle-class status are the hardworking Overseas Chinese, followed increasingly by the Overseas Indians. The Malays mostly occupy government jobs. But their income is rising too as Malaysia becomes richer and the government has more to spend on them.
Hundreds of millions of people have risen out of grinding poverty in Asia in the last few decades, and rather quietly large parts of Africa are beginning to do better - fueled by bottom-up economic development, much related to the explosion of a cell phone economy.
As much as people love pessimism, the two most striking global trends over time have been reduced poverty and greatly reduced violence.
It’s not an analysis if Americans will be richer in 2030 than they are today; it’s about how many people worldwide will be in grinding poverty or not.
Not that anyone would actually bother to read the article or even think 2 seconds before a kneejerk post.
Just stating my opinion.
America is shrinking.
I want America to grow, and grow, and grow.
