The House voted down a bill restricting abortion access in the District of Columbia Tuesday, despite overwhelming Republican support for the legislation.
The bill fell 220-154. It was voted on “under suspension of the rules,” a procedure that is typically reserved for legislation that is non-controversial. It also requires two-thirds of members voting in the affirmative -- in this case, 249 votes -- to pass.
The bill stands no chance of getting through the Democratic-controlled Senate. Given that reality, putting the legislation up for a vote under suspension of the rules allows Republicans a chance to get Democrats on the record on an abortion vote, without having to spend time getting the bill through the House Rules committee and on to the floor.
Anti-abortion groups used the vote to try and force the president to comment on the bill, something that has a very slim chance of happening.
“The White House cannot remain silent on this. The American people deserve to know whether the President endorses the status quo in the District of Columbia, which is abortion on demand, for any reason, regardless of the pain experienced by the unborn at this advanced stage of pregnancy, up to the moment of birth,” Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser said in a statement.
There were six RINOs who voted to not suspend the rules:
Bass (NH), Biggert, Bono Mack, Dent, Dold, and Dreier.
On the other hand, there were 17 Dems who voted to suspend the rules.
Dreier has an almost perfect pro-life voting record over his 32 years in the House. He is also the Chairman of the Rules Committee. I have to assume that Dreier voted against suspension of the rules not because he wants post-22-week abortions being carried out in DC, but because he’s protecting his turf.
Bass, Biggert, Dent and Dold are pro-abortion (although they sometimes vote against public financing), and Bono Mack has become one as well (she used to have a more mixed voting record on abortion). The one name that I can’t believe is not on the list is Richard Hanna of NY; he is the most pro-abortion Republican in the House, and I have to assume that he was absent if he didn’t vote against suspension of the rules.
Who were the 17 Dems who voted to suspend the rules? My guess, without having seen the vote results, is as follows:

Not only that but only six RINOs had to vote wrong on this procedural motion to kill the bill. Bass should never have been nominated again after his despicable voting record and his defeat two elections ago. His largely rural Northern District in New Hampshire owes a LOT more to America. Dreier is retiring so we can't punish him for revealing his true sympathies. Connie Bono Mack is a disgrace to her late husband Sonny Bono and to current husband Connie Mack. See how far being a pretty face can get you. Biggert and Dold are typical bad news Illinois RINO trash. I am not familiar with Dent.
Except for Dreier, it was the usual set of RINO trash. I don’t know what got into Dreier, but as it was noted, you can’t punish him because he’s retiring. We’ll probably see some silly “primary Dreier!!” threads anyway, like when people wanted to “take out” Larry Craig and Bob Turner, not bothering to check up and realize they were already gone in November.
Bass and Dent have always been backstabbing RINOs, and have needed to be purged for sometime. I’m particularly irked by Bass’ “comeback” on the wave of the 2010 GOP gains, because he won thanks to the tea party enviroment but can now return to his usual ways of thrwating everything they believe in. Fortunately I think there’s been a changing of the guard in the NH GOP leadership, so it might be possible to finally mount a credible challenger to these elistist RINO turd.
Biggert is worthless but is geninuely “moderate. Unfortunately abortion is one of the issues where she usually sides with the left. We’ve also been trying to get rid of her for years, but she looks like a saint next to...
Bob Dold. Et tu, Bob? I endorsed this SOB last time and gave him the benefit of the doubt in the hopes that he was telling the truth about being “middle of the road” on abortion and geninuely “moderate”. Instead, he quickly showed his true colors and morphed into Mark Kirk Jr. Another abortion loving Planned Parenthood yes-man. After Porter, Kirk, and Dold, that’s the third phony “Republican moderate” in that district. I could care less about him now. If I had to pick one seat the RATs “take back” one seat from our 2010 gains, this jerk would be the first to go. I’m sure some freepers will lecture me about how the RAT candidate is more liberal and blah blah blah, that’s true, but at least with the RAT you know what you’re getting and he won’t lie to your face about his agenda. I am sick and tired of abortion-loving socialist “Republicans” flat out lying to conservatives in Illinois to get their support. I have less respect for Dold than I do even worst RINOs who at least make it clear of their contempt for conservatives. This guy and the combiner liberal he spawned from, Kirk, will laughably claim they’re “Socially moderate” and the media will cover for them every time.
Bono Mack, same deal, always been a squishy “moderate” Republican but lately she’s morphed into a full fledged liberal RINO, it just took a lot longer than it did with Dold. Sonny is spinning in his grave. I really don’t think her current “conservative” husband is bothered by her liberal beliefs though, and I’m guessing he will likewise become a RINO if we elect him to the Senate, though his House record has been fairly reliably “conservative” (you heard it here, first). Both of them seem to enjoy getting invited to the usual insider cocktail parties where liberal elites will heap praise of them for “growing” in office and standing up to the mean, nasty conservatives. Probably has the same sense of family entitlement that Bass has. I’m not sure what her seat looks like after redistricting, but it would be nice to replace Mary with a decent Republican.
According to the 08 POTUS numbers her district is pretty much the same politically. GOP leaning, narrowly carried by comrade Osama in his cali landslide. Her current 45th was 52-47 Osama and her new 36th is’s 50-47.

BTW a DC bill I’d liked to see passed is one eliminating their home rule. I’d appoint Bret Schundler as Mayor and a city council of other urban Republicans.
I considered Kildee (who used to vote 100% pro-life), Langevin (formerly pro-life, until the embryonic stem-cell research issue and pressure from liberal groups seemingly made him switch) and Kissell (who had been 100% pro-abortion but is now pretending to be conservative in a futile effort of getting reelected in a much more Republican district), but thought that Bishop, Kaptur and Lynch (my last three additions) were likelier due to their more recent votes. Lynch’s record on abortion is definitely mixed.
