Election '12: Once again, the GOP establishment has been shocked by the resilience of the Tea Party movement. Ted Cruz's Senate nomination in Texas shows that ideas trump fundraising this fateful election year.
The Tea Party is deservedly celebrating a stirring win by former Texas solicitor general Cruz in a runoff that determined which Republican vies for the seat of retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison in November. Massively outspent by establishment-backed opponent Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, Cruz finished with nearly 57% of the vote.
But another factor is at play, which also explains Richard Mourdock's recent primary defeat of Senator-for-life Richard Lugar in Indiana and little-known state Sen. Deb Fischer's unforeseen primary triumph in May over Nebraska's attorney general and treasurer.
Many voters have concluded that the old-guard Republicans in power in Congress for so many years before the 2006 election are nearly as big a problem as Barack Obama and the Democrats.

His platform, in fact, is a conservative's dream list. It includes ending the moratorium on offshore drilling, opening up vast new reserves of oil and gas, repealing Dodd-Frank's new regulatory regime, defanging Sarbanes-Oxley's onerous regulations on business, cutting corporate tax rates to 15%, enacting a flat tax or something close to it, "fundamental entitlement reform," restoring the currency by restraining the Federal Reserve and passing a balanced budget amendment.
I saw a belly-aching profile of Cruz yesterday by one of the main pundits. I can’t remember which one it was (Charlie Cook? Another? Can’t recall). But the gist was this. The pundit said that he had encountered candidates who were confident before, but never one like Cruz who was off the charts in his “arrogance”. He went on to say that Cruz won’t be able to do anything in the Senate because of this fiercely confident temperment.
I’m not so sure.
I think this is exactly what we need...and we need it desperately. Cruz doesn’t need the old guard leadership to tell him how to play.
It’s a new game in town.
Cruz is all things that MSM said of Obama is about: smart, good looking, editor of Harvard Law Review, minority, success story of a son of immigrant, constitutional scholar, great lawyer, etc, etc... On Obama, they merely elements of grand narrative that aren’t necessarily true. On Cruz, they’re real, documented, plus some more...
They are very afraid of Cruz. They fear Cruz will become a conservative version of Obama with even better narrative. If he run for a president, he’ll take Hispanic votes away from Democratic Party. They were afraid of Estrada before, but he was nothing like a US Senator Cruz. Hopefully they give him good space for him at the convention...

I had the privilege of watching him argue in front of the Fifth Circuit a few years ago. I suppose he would have been about 36 or so at the time. He was shocking in his knowledge and really, his whole demeanor. He was confident...supremely so. But not in an off-putting way. It was extraordinarily impressive.
He is sort of Ronald Reagan 2.0. He has slightly different strengths than Reagan. Reagan was very smart, and could, as an actor memorize speeches all day long. But he wasn’t a deep scholar in the way that Cruz is. Cruz is as knowledgeable as say, Rehnquist, but with lots of other traits. Reagan, again, was brilliant, but in a more common sense way and in an interpersonal way. Cruz just has a huge amount of straight up intellectual horsepower.
Plus, he comes to the game of politics earlier than Reagan did. Of course, that cuts both ways as Reagan had enough success in the real world to not need to be a politician. But he affected the national scene for not nearly long enough. Cruz could affect the country for the next 40 years.
So the strengths that he had and the strengths that Reagan had are not completely identical. But there is a lot of overlap. And once Reagan started running for President, that was a game changer nationally. I think Cruz’s nomination and election will be of that same caliber.

Think you are incorrect that Cruz can’t run for Prez. This is copy of a post from AuH20Republican on July 31st:

I’m not sure if his father was already a U.S. citizen at such time, but even if he wasn’t, Ted’s mother was a U.S. citizen who had resided in the U.S. for more than 10 years, at least 5 of which were after having turned 14, so Ted met the legal criteria to be a U.S. citizen at birth. The prevailing interpretation of constitutional scholars for a couple of centuries now is that a person who is a U.S. citizen at birth under U.S. law is, ipso facto, a natural-born citizen of the United States.”
The Tea Party must take over the GOP or they must kill the GOP and start a new Political Party to replace it. The old ways—working with big contributes, leftist media, progressives have given us a generation of john McCanes —Things got to change!
AuH20R is very, very wrong in his constitutional interpretation.
There’s never been a president born outside the United States. Natural born has meant just that - born inside the United states.
Sorry, Cruz doesn’t qualify. He’ll make a fine senator, but we have better candidates who were born in America.
