North Korea's Olympic athletes are thrilling their countrymen with surprising success in winning medals and they are attributing their success to their Dear Leader Kim Jong Un.
But others, including former North Korean athletes who have defected, suggest the success of the country's small contingent of athletes at the games may be the result of a policy of training them from a very young age at specialized schools, backed up by rewards like cars and refrigerators for winners and the threat of labor camps for losers.
North Korea ranks 14th in the overall medal count, but fifth in terms of the number of gold medals with four.

Gee - nothing like our country, where the winners get multi-million dollar endorsement deals, and the losers stock shelves at the Home Depot....
Winners also get a notice of tax due from the IRS...
I remember my dad telling me to cheer for our athletes but not to hope the Soviets lose. He told me then that our athletes that lose go on to great lives, even without a medal, while the Soviets go home to Siberia.
I tell my kids the same about the Chinese, the Cubans, the Venezuelans and the North Koreans.

If that’s what they chose to do, they chose it.
But they have a CHOICE. The athletes from the communist countries don’t.

That is called ‘signifyin’ and it does make a neat storage bin as since there is no food, it doesn’t matter cause there isn’t much electricity either.

That doesn’t matter. The refrigerator or car was probably designed personally by the Supreme Leader. It another object they can’t use but must venerate. /s
Not surprising, and certainly nothing new.
IIRC, one of Saddam Hussien’s sons was in charge of either Iraq’s Olympic or World Cup soccer team, and he would personally torture (real, physical torture, not the sort that John Mcain claims went on at Club Gitmo) athletes who weren’t performing as well as he thought they should.

Even when American Olympians LOSE, they can still make six-figure salaries. The competing pro skiers are at $70k up into the millions.

So, what’s wrong with that?
That stuff don’t stock itself.
I was thinking about this while watching the USA vs PRK soccer match.
It’s pitiful. Pitiable? (Hmm, what’s the difference, anyway? Something to look up — once again. Maybe it’ll stick this time!)
To think about an entire team of innocent young kids flushed down the drain like that... Who knows how many of them will survive it? For losing a damn soccer game.
