Exec Bullies Chick-Fil-A Worker, Then Promptly Gets Fired For It

Adam Smith, former CFO and treasurer of medical supplies manufacturer Vante, riled people up today when he put up a video of himself bullying a Chick-fil-A drive-thru employee in Tucson on YouTube.

Smith unsympathetically berates the worker in the video, which was initially titled ”Reduce $’s to Chick-Fil-A’s Hate Groups.” It has since been taken down (though other have uploaded it too).

”I’m a nice guy, by the way … totally heterosexual," he says to the worker. "Not a gay in me, I just can’t stand the hate.”

Smith has now been fired from his job at Vante. Here's the press release from Vante announcing that Smith is "no longer an employee of our company," effective immediately:

LOL!!!

The thing about Liberace is, for all his flamboyance, he had an air of “cool.” I saw him perform in Vegas with the family when I was a kid... he had the showmanship down to an art! Today`s homosexual celebrities don`t have a fraction of Liberace`s class and charisma.

My concern is that if firing people for free speech acts on their own time becomes allowed then Christians will be next.

His behavior goes well beyond a "free speech act". Private companies are entitled to reserve the right to terminate employees who engage in activities destructive to their business. Professing a particular religious belief is a far cry from a CFO acting like a public jackass, filming himself doing it, and then posting it on the internet in a manner that could be linked to Vante. No one made him do it.

I support free speech for all - even lefties. Was hostile and not properly done but don’t feel someone should be fired to expressing political views unless there’s some other interest at stake.

This is a private company that has decided that the actions of one of its employees reflected poorly on the company, and decided to act. That is certainly well within their rights, and does not infringe on the rights of the employee - the employee is free to express whatever opinions he wishes, but does not have the right to be free from the consequences of those opinions.

Of course, that is much different than the Chick-fil-a matter. In that case, public officials were threatening to use the power of government to punish a company for speech it did not like. That is a clear violation of the First Amendment.

Now, if the university this guy lectures for decided to fire him over it, he might have a case, assuming that it is a publicly-funded university.

Wow, I felt so sorry for the Chick-Fil-A worker. She was so pleasant (like most of them are) and was eager to give him his free water and he had to be a complete ass. She has nothing to be ashamed about and shame on him for taking out his dysfunction on an innocent human.

Scary how they can just go off because someone tells them to. It’t like they have a rabies button or something, and some one knows how to use it.

He identified himself as CFO of this company....they have every right to fire him. If he had not done so it might have been different if his companies customers had not recognized him and felt slighted. Truth be told one of his companies customers might have felt the same way Mr Cathy felt and called the CEO and told him if that was how this guy felt he would take his business elsewhere. For a CFO to act this childish would turn off a lot of people.

She valued her employment and employer a lot more than mister bigshot. All work, even what many might consider humble, has value and dignity.

Any half way competent employer has a “employment at will” clause in their executive contracts. He can file, he will jack squat

I suspect Mr. Smith wanted it to turn out more like this.

Cheers!

Good points and I agree. Have I ever told you how I value the people that pick up our garbage more than any tax dollar sucking bureaucrat? Well, I'll save that for another day.
