TransCanada Corp. will be promoting a shorter leg in an upcoming open season on its massive Alaska to Alberta natural gas pipeline project, offering shippers an option to move gas to a liquefaction plant in Alaska.
The pipeline and energy firm will run the non-binding solicitation of interest during two weeks in September as part of a biannual commitment to the state proving market interest in the long-delayed project.
“The difference between (the last open season in 2010) and now is that we’re also looking at the LNG option in Alaska, which the governor had requested that we look at,” said Shawn Howard, TransCanada spokesman, Monday.
Earlier this year TransCanada and partner ExxonMobil announced they were looking at including a route which would move natural gas to a liquefied natural gas terminal on the coast of Alaska as part of the $24 billion US to $48 billion US project.
TransCanada bid successfully in 2008 to build a pipeline which would carry Alaska gas to southern markets, winning as well $500 million in state backing under the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act.
Howard said the partners were investigating several locations for the tide water liquefaction plant in Alaska, including Valdez.
The solicitation of interest will run from August 31 to Sept 14, TransCanada said.
ExxonMobil is one of three major natural gas producers in Alaska’s North Slope, including ConocoPhillips and BP.
We here in Alaska are sitting on one of the largest and oldest proven gas reserves, and have built the facilities to process the gas. But the American Government will not let us do that. So the Canadians are willing to build a pipeline just to use our idle factories.
Most of the mining in Alaska is done by Canada, because it is impossible to get the permits if your a citizen.
Just with Alaska alone, it shows that the economic “down turn” is intentionaly being put into place by those who control legislation.
