They couldn’t “stop at civil unions”. The left wouldn’t let them, because that wouldn’t have achieved the goal of UNdefining marriage and of criminalizing Christianity.
So, the homos were told “nothing less than full equal legal and societal recognition of gay ‘marriage’ will be allowed”.

It all began with DADT in the 1990’s, which seemed like a reasonable policy. But, with every step, the activists screamed for more and more.
If marriage is ever redefined nationwide, what will happen next? Will the activists stop there?
At some point, they will have to concede that, whatever name is given to a same-sex relationship, it can never be the same as marriage. So maybe their next step will be to have any disagreement with same-sex “marriage” labeled as a hate crime under the law.
And then what will they want next? Already there have been articles claiming same-sex couples somehow have superior relationships, and that the rest of us can learn from them. And, already, same-sex couples are given adoption privileges that single people and people in platonic relationships aren’t given. Will same-sex couples be screaming for adoption privileges over opposite-sex married couples next?
It all sounds crazy, but we live in strange times.
