If the dude thought they were Muslims and was just a bigot why did he wait so long after 911 to take out his revenge?

A good question. One possibility though is that he has harbored hatred against Muslims all this time, but not to the point of doing something like this. Yet recently he suffered a breakdown,became suicidal, and decided he may as well take out some Muslims with him.
