If football dies, then America dies with it.

If it were any other job, where work conditions were such that the average worker had to retire before they were 35 and that the workers in the industry were prone to having dementia before they were 55, would there be anybody here who would disagree with the need for the industry to look at ways to make workers safer?

I’m not anti-football, but there was a time when players could enjoy post-football careers and weren’t at risk of being in senior citizen centers by the time they were 50 or simply blew their head off, because they couldn’t continue to bear their injuries.

Yeah, I know, I miss the football we had during the days of Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann, Franco Harris, etc. I remember it was a big deal where William "The Refrigerator" Perry weighed like over 350 pounds in the 1980's. Well, there could always be a maximum weight limit, I dunno.

I talked this over with a mechanic friend of mine as I delivered auto parts to him. I said, maybe we will be like "The Jetsons" where we will have robot football players. He quipped back, "either that, you you will have 22 Playstations (11 per team) hooked into a mainframe and 22 gaming geeks will each play a player in a virtual world."

I agree.

And old-time tackling, where it was done with the shoulders.

If they succeed in prohibiting football, then bans on hot dogs and apple pie will surely follow. After all, hot dogs are full of fat and sodium and the buns are made from white flour, and apple pie is full of sugar, fats and refined carbohydrates.

He’s correct, football will become too boring to watch. It’s going to become like Basketball, with its crooked Refs rigging the games. Professional Basketball is now on par with Professional Wrestling. Football is next.

That would solve it right quick. I've been saying this for a decade.

If we have to replace football, I say replace it with Gaelic Football.....after seeing some YouTube videos, I am shocked the game never took off outside of the Irish Diaspora.

I played the game only in high school, but even there I remember coming home EVERY night after a game or full-pads practice with a headache. Now, maybe that’s just because I was a wimp, but it leads me to be less than enthusiastic about encouraging my son to play.

...maybe we will be like "The Jetsons" where we will have robot football players.

If you look closely, you will notice that the robots all have Irish and Polish names--the show being from 1963.

What’s the big deal?

Why CAN’T there be a weight limit?

Push limits back to what the average player weighed in the seventies, or early eighties, or whenever everybody thinks the ‘golden age’ was, before everybody started getting concussions.

How does this “destroy” the game?

Or simple Rugby. That’s a rough sport to play, when done right.

Wow I was going to post that Australian rules football [NOT rugby] is a great game - then I saw the Gaelic football video.

They are about exactly the same. Aussie rules has an oblong ball [not pointy like our gridiron footballs], not completely round. And in Aussie rules, the scoring is done by putting the ball thru uprights [center uprights 6, outer uprights 1.]

But the rules are about the same it looks like. In Aussie rules, a kicked ball that is caught earns a free kick [or one may play on] but I didn’t see that in Gaelic.

Aussie rules you have to bounce the ball every 10 meters, can only punch or kick the ball to someone [no throwing.]

Looks cool and thanks for sharing the link.

greatest game i _ever_ played

When I was overseas, I came to appreciate football because it is something uniquely American. Very few foreigners understand it.

If you think it's hard to explain football to an Englishman, try explaining it, in German, to a German.

Roger Goodell is a pussy. A real man like Pete Rozelle would stand up and defend his sport.

Sort of on topic. What are the odds the SEC will drop Chick Fil A as a sponsor.
