Penn State adds names, ribbon to football jerseys
The Associated Press 1 hour 28 minutes ago
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Players' names are being added to Penn State's football jerseys for the coming season, the university announced Tuesday, along with blue ribbons to show support for victims of child abuse.
The team's generic look - blue-and-white, no names on jerseys - has long been a trademark and was associated with the buttoned-down style of former coach Joe Paterno, who was fired last year after his former assistant Jerry Sandusky was arrested on child molestation charges.
School officials said adding the names was a way to recognize the ''resolve and dedication'' of the players, as the team faces a four-year bowl ban and loss of scholarships under the severe penalties handed down by the NCAA last month over the school's handling of the Sandusky scandal.

So the players are now getting victimized for the third time. The rapists/scumbags, the NCAA, and now this.
What bullshit. Hang the #, and get on with it. The students don’t deserve this never ending enema.
Nice gesture on their part. After all, the players are innocent and just want to get on with the game.
No, but the position the football program maintains at Penn State does. And that includes all the folks who are still saying “JoePa would never have done that, it can’t be true.”
The “above the law” culture needs to be broken.
All dressed up and no place to go...
I’m not seeing where the players got victimized at all. None of them were raped so your first one is a non-issue on the player front. The NCAA declared the players were free to go to other schools without the normal 1 year off, so clearly anybody that stayed chose to, no victims there. And since when is getting your name on the jersey bad? Yeah it’s a change of their tradition, but change happens. OK they gotta stick a ribbon on their jersey, if they get to the NFL they’re gonna get plenty of ribbons there too, it’s the modern age of sports.
Most butt ugly uniforms in college football.
What an empty worthless action.
I never thought I'd see the day where louis effin' freeh was so revered on this forum.
Here's the truth (or at least the start of it): framingpaterno.com
Are you remotely familiar with NCAA punishments over the last twenty years?
Plenty of schools have been banned from bowl games and/or television appearances, and had scholarships taken away - all because of the actions of one or two players and a booster, or a coach, or a couple of players. Yet the punishments affect all of the team, including 70-80+ players who 'didn't do the crime, but are doing the time.'
There are athletes at USC who suffered a bowl ban who weren't at USC when Reggie Bush and his family took housing, clothing, trips, a car, and cash from an agent.
PSU players should do that time because that's they way it works in the NCAA - and yet they, unlike the players at the other punished schools - were given the right to transfer without sitting out a year.
Considering that covering up a pedophile for thirteen years ranks a little higher than getting free tattoos or a hundred dollar handshake, I'd say the PSU players should be thankful each night that this punishment is all PSU received.
“along with blue ribbons to show support for victims of child abuse”
That’s crass. Keep the game on the field, keep the social issues in society.

Are you remotely familiar with NCAA punishments over the last twenty years?...
...please don’t confuse the faithful with facts and logic, they so do get in the way of the revisionist narrative... they will not be happy until some report comes out ‘proving’ that the victimization never happened and all should be returned to the primrose palace that was PSU of the 1990’s...and nothing, but nothing, will ever change again, including the uniforms...
...continuing this topic is like beating a dead horse, worse actually...some very childish posting on both sides of the issue...I’m signing off this topic, my last remark being I think Paterno was a fine man over the course of many years, whose name and image belong on the PSU campus, but he was just that, a man who, with his cohorts, got caught up in a situation in which a certain response was demanded, and they chose another...I doubt very many college coaches and administrators would have acted much differently, they were the unfortunate ones who got nailed...Paterno, and by extension his family, has ended up bearing by far the brunt of the blame for this, as a scapegoat will, but, after all he was the king of PSU football, andto paraphrase Shakespeare, uneasy rests the crown on the head of the king, and the distance from kingship to scapegoat is not all that far, really...
