CNSNews.com) - President Barack Obama, who is moving ahead with a regulation that forces observant American Catholics to act against their consciences and the teachings of their faith, will be one of the keynote speakers at an Oct. 18 white-tie fundraiser hosted by Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
The fundraiserthe annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner--will benefit the foundation, which Cardinal Dolan serves as board president. The foundation's website says it provides funding for healthcare causes.
Al Smith, a three-term governor of New York, became the first Catholic presidential candidate in U.S. history when the Democratic Party nominated him in 1928.
Mitt Romney, who as governor of Massachusetts determined that Catholic hospitals in that state would be required to distribute Plan B abortion pills to rape victims, will join Obama as a keynote speaker at the white-tie dinner.
Both Obama and Sen. John McCain spoke at the Al Smith dinner in October 2008, shortly before that years presidential election.
But, in 2004, the New York Times reported, neither President George W. Bush nor Sen. John Kerry were invited; and, in 1996, neither President Bill Clinton nor Sen. Bob Dole were invited. Clinton was reportedly not invited because he had vetoed the ban on partial-birth abortion. Kerry was reportedly not invited because he was a pro-abortion Catholic.
Obama is outspokenly and unambiguously pro-abortion. He is also the only sitting president in U.S. history to expressly support same-sex marriage.
In Illinois in 2001, Obama was the only state senator to speak on the senate floor against legislation that would have simply said a born baby is a person, a human being, a child, and an individual and thus entitled under the 14th Amendment to equal protection of the law.
In June, under Cardinal Dolans leadership, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops unanimously approved a statement condemning a regulation issued under the Obamacare law by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius that requires virtually all health-care plans in the United States to cover, without cost-sharing, sterilizations, artificial contraception and abortion-inducing drugs.
The unanimous statement cited the bishops vigorous opposition to this unjust and illegal mandate. It pointed out that the regulation not only failed to exempt Catholic institutions such as hospitals, charities and universities, but also attacked the free exercise of religion of individual Catholic laypersons.
The bishops unanimously called the regulation a violation of personal civil rights.
The HHS mandate creates still a third class, those witonscience protection at all: individuals who, in their daily lives, strive constantly to act in accordance with their faith and moral values, said the unanimous Catholic bishops. They, too, face a government mandate to aid in providing services contrary to those valueswhether in their sponsoring of, and payment for, insurance as employers; their payment of insurance premiums as employees; or as insurers themselveswithout even the semblance of an exemption. This, too, is unprecedented in federal law, which has long been generous in protecting the rights of individuals not to act against their religious beliefs or moral convictions. We have consistently supported these rights, particularly in the area of protecting the dignity of all human life, and we continue to do so.
On May 21, Cardinal Dolans Archdiocese of New York sued HHS Secretary Sebelius, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner arguing the regulation violated the archdioceses First Amendment right to the free exercise of religion.
The lawsuit said the Obama administration was attempting to use a federal regulation to make Catholics act against their faith and was specifically designed to discriminate against the religious institutions, such as Catholic institutions, that oppose both abortion and contraception. The Archdiocese of New Yorks lawsuit also suggested President Obama himself had been duplicitous.
The legislative history of the Act [Obamacre] also demonstrates a clear congressional intent to prohibit the executive branch from requiring group health plans to provide abortion-related services, the lawsuit said. For example, the House of Representatives originally passed a bill that included an amendment by Congressman Bart Stupak prohibiting the use of federal funds for abortion services. The Senate version, however, lacked that restriction. To avoid a filibuster in the Senate, congressional proponents of the Act engaged in a procedure known as budget reconciliation that required the House to adopt the Senate version of the bill largely in its entirety. Congressman Stupak and other pro-life House members, however, indicated that they would refuse to vote for the Senate version because it failed adequately to prohibit federal funding of abortion. In an attempt to address these concerns, President Obama issued an executive order providing that no executive agency would authorize the federal funding of abortion services.
The Act was, therefore, passed on the central premise that all agencies would uphold and follow longstanding Federal laws to protect conscience and to prohibit federal funding of abortion, said the archdioceses lawsuit. That executive order was consistent with a 2009 speech that President Obama gave at the University of Notre Dame, in which he indicated that his Administration would honor the consciences of those who disagree with abortion, and draft sensible conscience clauses.
Nonetheless, the New York Archdioceses lawsuit alleges, the Obama administration swiftly turned around and violated the assurance Obama had given Rep. Stupak to get Obamacare passed. It did so by forcing all health-plansincluding those that would be bought or provided by Catholicsto cover abortion-inducing drugs.
In less than two years, Defendants promulgated the U.S. Government Mandate, subverting the Acts clear purpose to protect the rights of conscience, said the lawsuit.
The Obama administrations regulation, said the lawsuit, was in direct contradiction to Obamas promise.
In direct contradiction of the central compromise necessary for the Affordable Care Acts passage and President Obamas promise to protect religious liberty, HHSs guidelines required insurers and group health plans to cover [a]ll Food and Drug Administration approved contraceptive methods, sterilization procedures, and patient education and counseling for all women with reproductive capacity, said the lawsuit.
The lawsuit then pointed to the war HHS Secretary Sebelius believes she is in against pro-life forces to explain why the archdiocese believes the very purpose of the Obama administrations regulation was to discriminate against pro-life religious institutions.
The U.S. Government Mandate, moreover, was promulgated by Government officials, and supported by non-governmental organizations, who strongly oppose certain Catholic teachings and beliefs, said the lawsuit.
For example, on October 5, 2011, Defendant Sebelius spoke at a fundraiser for NARAL Pro-Choice America, the lawsuit said. Defendant Sebelius has long supported abortion rights and criticized Catholic teachings and beliefs regarding abortion and contraception. NARAL Pro-Choice America is a pro-abortion organization that likewise opposes many Catholic teachings. At that fundraiser, Defendant Sebelius said, we are in a war, and criticized individuals and entities whose beliefs differed from those held by her and the other attendees of the NARAL Pro-Choice America fundraiser. She added: Wouldnt you think that people who want to reduce the number of abortions would champion the cause of widely available, widely affordable contraceptive services? Not so much.
Consequently, on information and belief, Plaintiffs allege that the purpose of the U.S. Government Mandate, including the narrow exemption, is to discriminate against religious institutions and organizations that oppose abortion and contraception, said the lawsuit.
In stump speeches this summer, President Obama has repeatedly defended and boasted about this HHS regulation that the archdiocese of New York is arguing in federal court was designed with the purpose of discriminating against organizations that oppose abortion and contraception.
CNSNew.com contacted the the Archdiocese of New York on Monday and Tuesday to ask about the reported invitation to President Obama to keynote the Al Smith dinner, but did not get a response.
Late Tuesday, however, the New York Times posted an article with an explanation from the archdiocese on the invitation to Obama.
It is the tradition of the Smith dinner to invite the presidential candidates in the presidential election years in the spirit of nonpartisanship, good humor and good fellowship, archdiocese spokesman Joseph Zwilling told the Times.
In 2004, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement on Catholics in Political Life. It said: The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.
When Obama spoke at the 2008 Al Smith dinner he said: Contrary to the rumors that you've heard, I was not born in a manger.
If I had to name my greatest strength, I guess it would be my humility, Obama said. Greatest weakness? It's possible that I am a little too awesome.
If the current pope in Rome doesn't recall this shameful Judas and bust him to private, then I consider Rome playing a part in this travesty!
Why this left wing presidential filth would be allowed to step foot on ANY Catholic property or be " invited" to ANY Catholic institution what-so-ever is beyond common sense and understanding. Hopefully the Pope will intervene and 1) recall Cardinal Dolan to Rome and 2)FORBID Obama from attending ANY Catholic function what-so-ever. It can not be overstated that the Anti-Catholic,Anti-Christian,Homophile-Hugger ,Obama is not welcomed by Catholics and is not be tolerated on the hallowed grounds of the Catholic Church. If Obama Shows up, the Catholics in attendace should simply walk out of the event in total silence.PERIOD.Lord, Hear our Prayer.. Amen and Amen
The Devil can and will seek any crack, or crevice to enter, it's evident that Cardinal Dolan, has many.
Maybe “crevice to enter” is the operative phrase.
I have posted something similar elsewhere, but I think it’s time to say it again: no hyperventilating.
Dolan is inviting both Obama and Romney, which is the normal procedure for the Al Smith Dinner in an election year.
Frankly, I think he’s more interested in hearing Romney explain himself. Everybody knows what Bambi thinks, but Romney - who as governor promoted “gay marriage” and insisted that MA state employees perform “gay marriages,” and who forced the Church to provide the “morning after pill” in emergency rooms - is his usual slippery, elusive self.
Have you heard Romney come out opposing Obama on any of these issues? No, neither have I.
A group of very important Catholics formed an organization to support Romney, probably on the Anybody But Obama line, but the problem is that there is little indication that Romney would do anything differently.
I think Cdl Dolan wants to know.
The Catholic Church left me, I didn’t leave it.
The New (Novus Ordo)Catholic Church left me and millions of others, but I found solace in a Traditional Tridentine church of which there are hundreds across North America.
The catholic church stands for life, for traditional family.
Why does the church support politicians who so fervently fight for legislation against God's will?
Probably has the Judas french-kissing a poodle.
My take on Cardinal Dolan is that he is a tough cookie. I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes it to Bammy on the day.
Is IbJensen the devil?
How things have changed. I have twice had the opportunity to attend Easter Service at St. Patrick’s while in New York.
Cardinal’s Dying Wish: Keep Clinton Out of St. Patrick’s
Monday, May 8, 2000
As Cardinal O’Connor battled brain cancer and faced death during the past eight months, he remained steadfast in his distaste of Bill Clinton.
A source close to the Cardinal tells NewsMax.com that O’Connor had a long-standing order to keep Bill Clinton out of St. Patrick’s Cathedral no matter how important the occasion.
Last week the White House announced that both Bill and Hillary Clinton would be attending the Cardinal’s funeral mass at St. Patrick’s, set for Monday afternoon.
“O’Connor would have gone berserk if he knew Clinton was coming,” the source said.
O’Connor was said to be extremely hostile to Clinton, a man who annoyed him on several levels. O’Connor had been a veteran, a Navy Admiral who had served in the military and in the front lines of Vietnam.
Clinton’s draft avoidance record didn’t sit well with the Cardinal, nor did Clinton’s corruption.
O’Connor was also annoyed with Clinton’s strong advocacy of partial birth abortion a procedure O’Connor likened to infanticide.
O’Connor’s animus toward the president erupted after the crash of TWA Flight 800 in 1996.
In the days after the tragedy, Mayor Giuliani had organized a memorial service for the victims’ families at JFK Airport.
Cardinal O’Connor was set to officiate, until he found out Clinton planned on attending.
“If Clinton is coming, you can count me out,” O’Connor’s office bluntly told the mayor’s office.
Clinton was quickly disinvited.
A month or so after the crash, O’Connor hosted his own memorial mass at St. Patrick’s for the victims. Clinton was in New York that weekend for a birthday party and the White House called the Archdiocese and asked if he could attend.
The answer from the Cardinal’s Office was blunt: Bill Clinton is not welcome at St. Patrick’s.
The more people who are “exposed” to Obama, the more they will come to see how evil and incompetent he is and vote for whoever opposes him. Dolan is no dummy.
[ The Catholic Church left me, I didnt leave it. ]
He’s not evil, just naive and strongly deluded in thinking he can convince Obama to back off from the mandate.
Now, will the LSM report on it truthfully? Doubtful.
(1) Cardinal Dolan has, without cause or motivation, morphed into baby-sacrificing Orc and sees Obama as his role model.
(2) Dolan's brain has inexplicably turned to bathwater, he has forgotten all he's told us over the past 45 months, and is embracing the man who lied to him.
(3) Dolan knows Obama is too much a narcissist to turn down a ("historic!") dinner invitation, and is luring him in to the most media-heavy charity event in the Media Capital of the World, --- TWO WEEKS before Election Day---- to expose him as the most deadly threat to the Church in U.S. history.
Who's the pawn on this chess board? And who's the bishop?
You're not fighting effectively if you're publically kneecapping the captain of your team.
P.S. Thank you, livius, for your customary good sense.
any idea how the Mormon Church looks at homosexuals?
No. He’s just one of millions of Traditional Catholics who believes that the main accomplishment of Vatican II was to create a new religion.
Which it did.
This is already a victory for Obama and the media will play up the october meeting as an Obama victory..My reading is Bishop Dolan plays things too cute,Dolan does not know he has already lost the pr game.
He knows he can’t change Obama’s mind. What he can do, though, is thank Obama for attending the dinner, thereby supporting the lawsuit against the mandate.
You know nothing at all about him. I do and YOU are a LIAR!
ask IbJensen. He’s probably one.
I don’t believe a person with such hate and anger as you diplay here can be a true Christian.
Best toddle off to confession (oh, I forgot, it’s ‘reconciliation’ now0 and confess your sin of unrighteous anger!

It’s so incongruously funny to envision a phony ‘Christian’ ‘laughing my ass off.’
You are a fatuous fool, but not a Christian so go haunt another website! There must be a one for atheists.
Being a retired psychiatrist and in full control of my faculties, I don't need help.
You might consider visiting your priest this Saturday morning. It's much more meaningful than spending money on a psychiatrists. Perhaps, Brown Bear, there isn't one on your reservation.
One last thought: perhaps you should stay away from computers as in some cases they could be dangerous to your mental health.
In just reviewing your comments to others over the past seven days it’s easy to come to the conclusion that you are seriously disturbed mentally. Just look for yourself and this is only a fraction of the raving verbage you’ve posted on this website:
You have proof of that, liar?
Are you drunk or just a liar?
Show me where I said it, LIAR!
waiting for your answer, moron...
never said I do, did I moron?
Really? no commercials here, dumbo.
you should be able to provide the evidence, otherwise you are a LIAR.
you are an ASS!
I didnt lie, but you did, LIAR!
You’re just full of sorts of LIES today, aren’t you?
It’s quite obvious based on your moronic statements.
It’s not me, moron.
Brown Deer needs to be totally ignored on this website!
Second, yes, Ann Barnhardt goes at Cardinal Dolan with a meat cleaver, Here (Link) Scroll down about 1/6 of the way until you come to the words, "TO HELL ITH 'NICE'. TO HELL WITH IT."
I do not recommend Miss Barnhardt's attitude here. It's rash judgment, i.e. interpreting someone else's motivations at the absolute worst. This --- assessing someone's interior dispositions --- ios something we must not presume to do.
It certainly does look like Dolan had not, still has not, thought the requisite 4 chess moves ahead. Yikes, what a bad situation.
