I had relatives who were steelworkers back in the glory days. Even they questioned the wisdom of these high wages and top of the line benefits.
My favorite benefit was the 13 week vacation. After x years of service, an employee was entitled to 13 weeks paid vacation in one year, every five years. My uncle once said he thought it was a ridiculous benefit — after about two weeks, he was bored out of his skull and couldn’t wait to get back to work — and that one day this benefit would become so expensive to the company, that jobs would be lost. Sure enough, when the steel industry in this country collapsed, his employer folded.
I could tell you Boeing stories from family that would make you sick. Actually sad. They get way overpaid but once they retire the union finds all ways to screw them because “other peoples money is just not there”. The unions and the Democrats stole it.
