Madonna was brandished a moralising 'slut' by a leading member of Vladimir Putin's government ahead of her concert in St Petersburg tonight.
The singer came under attack for promising to back the city’s gay community in St Petersburg, where it is unlawful to promote homosexuality to young people, with pink wristbands to be distributed during her concert. Deputy prime minister Dmitry Rogozin said on Twitter: 'With age, every former s. tries to lecture everyone on morality.'
Although he didn’t use the word in full, it was understood by all to mean the Russian word for 'slut' or 'whore'.
Rogozin, a former Russian ambassador to NATO, added on the social network: 'Either take off your cross, or put on your knickers.'
At her packed Moscow concert earlier this week, the 53-year-old star offended the Kremlin by calling on the authorities to release three members of the Pussy Riot punk group who are on trial for performing an anti-Putin song in a Moscow church.
She had the words ‘Pussy Riot’ scrawled on her back and sang 'Like a Virgin' wearing the punk group’s balaclava. A spokesman for Vitaly Milonov, a member of the St Petersburg legislature, said: 'In this case, steps will be taken to open an administrative probe, and she will face a fine for violating this law.
'We should not allow the imposition here in Russia of Western values that Madonna promotes.'

I do have one minor quibble. Rogozin used the phrase "former slut". I see no reason to limit the reference to past tense.
I heard that before self-adhereing stamps came into being, the US Postal Service was going to issue a Madonna Commemorative Stamp that would actually lick itself.
