Looks like the Department of Homeland Security could be renamed the Department of Hyper Sexuality. A blistering federal discrimination suit accuses agency honcho Janet Napolitano of turning the department into a female-run “frat house” where male staffers were banished to the bathrooms and routinely humiliated. James Hayes Jr., who now is New York’s top Homeland Security cop, claims Napolitano filled top spots in Washington, D.C., with two of her gal pals who were bent on tormenting male employees.

Saw the same kind of behavior in the early 1990s at IBM’s Westlake Laboratory. The nitwit IBM vice president in charge of the Software Division put a female (sort of reminds me of Napolitano) in as lab director, and she proceeded to fill all of the top staff positions with her female friends.

They totally fumbled the ball with the Division’s flagship product, OS2 OfficeVision. They spent huge amounts of time with daily, weekly and monthly status meetings because the dimwits in charge had no knowledge of how a software project should be run. The first woman in charge of Software development got promoted to vice president after she had done her damage (but before she could be called to account for her mismanagement) and a new and equally incompetent and inexperienced female was appointed to the job. She shut down the C-language effort and decided to switch to SmallTalk instead. Her rationale was that SmallTalk only needed 20% the number of lines of code that C did, despite the fact that the lab had only one or two programmers who knew anything at all about SmallTalk.

After fumbling around for a year with SmallTalk, they finally shut down the OS2 OfficeVision product entirely—I have no idea how many hundreds of millions of dollars were wasted in this boondoggle, but the price was high. A new lab director opted to husband along a new product that a couple of resourceful developers had been working on during their evenings and weekends, and we finally got it out the door in early 1995. Just then IBM bought Lotus Notes and they cancelled the product and shut down the lab.
