Geographically, yes, and the both joined the Confederacy. They USED to be Southern states.
Culturally and politically, anyone who knows anything about either state or lives there (I live in VA, btw) starts laughing hysterically when the idea of them being "Southern States" are brought up.

Correction....several hundred social conservatives on Free Republic and a couple of blogs have bleated loudly they will not vote for Romney. Those several hundred people do not represent in any way, shape, or form the millions of social conservatives out in the electorate.
Most social conservatives are heavily concentrated in states that no Republican could ever lose, and they are thus irrelevant.
Of the rest, the idea that there are millions of social cons who sit out election after election because the candidate isn't a check-box social con and will FINALLY show up to vote if we just had the perfect social con Presidential or VP candidate is a complete fantasy.
