Goldwater was not the GOP-e candidate in 1964, that was either Rockefeller or Taft.

In Fact, William F Buckley mocked the establishment in comment. After Goldwater won the California primary it was said by someone by that only rich voted for Goldwater, Buckley torted “that certainly would make California the land of opportunity”

Rockefeller turned out to be an outlier ~ not part of the GOP-e which has historically had a fairly strong uppermidwest component ~ the 'old money' so to speak. You should check out Mrs. Goldwater's bonifides sometime. Curl your hair.

The big problem with Rockefeller was he didn't have VOTERS behind him. The cultural corruption had gone just too deep in the NE. We still haven't pushed back on that problem and every election we lose more and more up there.
