President Obama called to personally congratulate the crew behind NASA’s successful rover mission to Mars on Monday and asked them to inform him immediately if they made contact with Martians.
“If in fact you do make contact with Martians, please let me know right away,” he said. “I've got a lot of other things on my plate but I expect that would go to the top of the list. Even if they're just microbes that would be pretty exciting.”
NASA live-streamed the president’s call to members of Curiosity's Mars rover team, located at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.
“You've made us all proud,” he told them, calling their work “inspiring” and an example of American ingenuity.
“I'm going to give you guys a personal commitment to protect these investments in science and technology,” he said.
He also asked about the NASA flight director who became an Internet sensation due to his highly visible role in the control room during Curiosity’s Martian landing last week.
“You guys are a little cooler than you used to be,” Obama joked when he asked about “Mohawk guy,” Flight Director Bobak Ferdowsi. "It does sound like NASA has come a long way from the white shirt, black dark-rimmed glasses and the pocket protectors," he noted.
"And I, in the past, thought about getting a mohawk myself — but my team keeps on discouraging me," he continued. "And now that he’s received marriage proposals and thousands of new Twitter followers, I think that I’m going to go back to my team and see if it makes sense."

His cancelling of NASA's mission to return to the moon, lent a devastating blow to the US on many levels, opportunities that might have regained US leadership in space travel, technology will be lost forever by other countries, namely China.
Whether it's to explore simply for the excitement that has kept Mankind on the constant path of discovery, thrill of it all, for scientific fulfillment, knowledge, to expand humankind's horizons, experience or even for economic benefit, gain. His idea of space travel is wearing Spock's ears that he thinks makes him so cool.
His comment about being immediately being informed if contact with Martians are made makes him sound even dorkier than he really is.
The Martians should watch out, before they know it he’ll be hitting them up for a campaign contribution.
Actually, “O” is afraid that if aliens are found, they’d want him back.

I’m surprised he didn’t ask if they’ve seen the flag Neil Armstrong planted and if so, run the rover over it.

It amazes me how this man turns EVERY situation around to reflect on himself. Notice all his comments about “I was thinking....” “I was going to....” “I should....”. Ugh disgusting.
I find his comments about dark-rimmed glasses & pocket portectors to be belittling.

On a visit to the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2005, Jackson Lee made embarrassing news by asking if the Mars Pathfinder had taken an image of the flag planted there in 1969 by Neil Armstrong.[2]
Prior to the 110th Congress, Jackson Lee served on the House Science Committee and on the Subcommittee that oversees space policy and NASA.
