Boom: Romney Campaign Releases Aggressive Medicare Ad
Townhall.com ^ | August 14, 2012 | Guy Benson

Yesterday, I urged the Romney campaign to go on "aggressive, sustained offense" over Medicare.  Not only is the bipartisan Romney-Ryan plan to save the social safety net and control the national debt entirely defensible, President Obama's previous actions and current non-plan are eminently assailable.  Today, Team Romney has demonstrated that it is fully prepared to throw a hard punch.  Up next?  Sustain it.  This is excellent:

Every statement in this ad is factually accurate.  I'm told it will air across numerous swing states in "strong rotation."  (Unspoken, but  obvious: Florida.)  The truth is that Barack Obama slashed more than $700 Billion from Medicare to pay for part of Obamacare -- an unpopular program that is making things worse.  Paul Ryan sat down for an interview with Fox News' Brit Hume earlier, and Hume asked the GOP Veep if he believes the Republican ticket can win the Medicare fight.  Ryan's answer?  "Absolutely."  Keep in mind that this strong opening salvo doesn't even touch the Medicare rationing board created by Obamacare, nor does it address the emotional issue of Paul Ryan's mother.  In other words, there's a lot of golden, factual material left to use.  Yuval Levin thinks Democrats may have gotten sand-bagged in this debate:

I don’t think Axelrod and Maddow were just setting out to lie exactly — it’s worse than that. Listening to them, it seemed as if they really hadn’t realized until now the situation they were in. They’re used to a certain order of things on Medicare and have not stopped to grasp what Obamacare has done to them. They assume it must be true that Republicans want to cut benefits and Democrats want to preserve them. But it’s not true, not anymore. You could see that panicked realization slowly rising in Maddow’s eyes as she was pressed. What she was probably recognizing was this: Obamacare changed everything. In the wake of that law, it is now clearer than it ever could have been before that the market solution is also the best one for seniors — that the conservative approach that would dramatically reduce the deficit is also the one that would avoid any disruptions for current beneficiaries and the one that would save Medicare in the longer run without shifting costs to future beneficiaries. And the Left can’t claim any of those benefits for its own approach to Medicare.

But didn't David Axelrod claim that the $700 Billion Medicare cut was a "lie" being foisted on the public by Republicans?  Wouldn't that invalidate the Romney ad's veracity?  It would, if he were right -- but he's wrong.  Don't ask me.  Ask...Barack Obama:

They ought to do a variant 45 to 60 seconds and run it in San Frandisco with Nancy saying": "You have to pass the Bill to see what's in it".

Would she loose? No, will it cost her money to cover her sorry butt, with even a weak Republican, sure.

Plant seeds of doubt for the next election cycle, absolutely....

Thanks..I figured it out...lol. It is a good ad but no game changer. I am coming down from the Ryan pick high. We need an August Surprise...like Obama’s college records or the Kalidi tape. Something to get this revolution going......lol.

Nobody on the left or their MediaPAC read ObamaTax or Ryan’s Budget Proposal — and now look stupid. They both are being exposed to voters for what they are, evil and UN-American.

I think it could well be a game changer. Particularly in Florida.

Seniors are very important to winning Florida and Florida is well-nigh essential to defeating Obama.

Seniors worry about Medicare, but strongly oppose Obamacare. Turning the tables on the Dems here and integrating Obamacare as well...

It’s very short and clear and simple. I think it, and this message, can be very effective and important.

And his running mate can explain in each and every speech, interview, and debate exactly how the money was lifted and moved in detail and to the penny. Wham, bam, thank you ma’am.

It may or may not. The moochers and looters in Florida don’t really care. The conservatives on the other hand would be willing to sacrifice some of their own comfort to protect their children and grandchildren. I pretty much see everyone in that kind of light now. Those who want to work and can’t (those we can bring to our side) and those that don’t want to do much of anything and want some of our hard earned money(Obama voters). Obama also has a lock on the crony capitalists that see themselves being one of his favored businesses etc. And want to mooch and loot too. It’s just one of those nights for me. Everything sucks. I will be better tomorrow....lol.

There is a fair number of voters who just don’t pay much either, so simple messages can work- particularly when they counter the dem scare seniors tactics.

And, I know what you mean about ‘one of those nights’. I’ve had a ton of ‘em this election season.

I hope all is much brighter in your world tomorrow..

But Ryan’s plan keeps the Obama cuts to Medicare, so the ads could backfire. The Medicare cuts are on both sides. If you say it “slashes” Medicare, then Ryan’s plan also “slashes” Medicare, since it keeps the same cuts. If it “robs” Medicare, then Ryan’s plan does the same.

This is not a good area to be in. But I guess they have to do something, or the Obama ads will kill them. Maybe the subject will change. A change in unemployment or something. OTOH, it may not hurt with seniors, since BOTH sides have a record of cutting Medicare. Maybe it’ll be a wash.
