A Russian, nuclear-powered attack sub patrolled the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, off the U.S. coast, undetected for a month, a new startling report from the Washington Free Beacon says.
The sub, the Free Beacon says, is an Akula vessel loaded with cruise missiles and is one of the quietest in the Russian fleet.
From the report:
The stealth underwater incursion in the Gulf took place at the same time Russian strategic bombers made incursions into restricted U.S. airspace near Alaska and California in June and July, and highlights a growing military assertiveness by Moscow.
The submarine patrol also exposed what U.S. officials said were deficiencies in U.S. anti-submarine warfare capabilitiesforces that are facing cuts under the Obama administrations plan to reduce defense spending by $487 billion over the next 10 years.
The Navy is in charge of detecting submarines, especially those that sail near U.S. nuclear missile submarines, and uses undersea sensors and satellites to locate and track them.
The fact that the Akula was not detected in the Gulf is cause for concern, U.S. officials said.
[...]
The Akula was built for one reason and one reason only: To kill U.S. Navy ballistic missile submarines and their crews, said a second U.S. official.
Its a very stealthy boat so it can sneak around and avoid detection and hope to get past any protective screen a boomer might have in place, the official said, referring to the Navy nickname for strategic missile submarines.

One would hope that we really DID know they were there but want them to think we didn’t know (Misinformation). But 0bama is President so we probably didn’t know, and WORSE, we LET THEM KNOW we didn’t know.
How do we KNOW now.-———Or do we????
If we knew they were there, there would be no reason to let them know we could watch it, so you may be right.
Thry must be checking things out for when obama has more flexibility. Just what promises has obama made? Time will tell.
I could understand they didn’t detect a dolphin or some other stealth boat. But last I heard, no nuke was ever *that* stealthy, including Akulas.
Of course, the west has let the detection networks rot as money is funneled to muslim immigrant groups and parasite orgs.
Islam is a Religion of Peace.
Got the cringe right there.
LOL, that's like not raising an alarm when thieves have broken into your house, lest they become aware of the presence of an anti-theft device (which failed).
What will always haunt me was the moment during the 2002 State of the Union address when he coined the phrase that Islam is a ROP, and the thundering applause that followed.
And this, so soon after 9/11/2001! What a bunch of suckups to Islam, I thought.
Not even in Europe have they ever called Islam a ROP.
The Akula was built for one reason and one reason only: To kill U.S. Navy ballistic missile submarines and their crews
That doesn't sound much like a cruise missile mission.
How would they target?
It has been over 40 years, but we still can’t say anything about this kind of story, other than, don’t believe everything you read in the paper. ;-)
“Emergency, everybody to get from strit!”
Wow....that’s great....MacDill Air force base which is where USCENTCOM is located off the Gulf of Mexico near Tampa....
Who knows what the russians picked up hanging around the Gulf of Mexico ....they could have been miles close to MacDill....
Hell, Obama probably invited them...you know to level the playing field ....
Exactly. The boat went undetected, but we know it was in the Gulf for a month?
You’re right! How could I forget that?
The submarine patrol also exposed what U.S. officials said were deficiencies in U.S. anti-submarine warfare capabilitiesforces that are facing cuts under the Obama administrations plan to reduce defense spending by $487 billion over the next 10 years.
Thank you.
