Portman is a very nice guy, my former congressman, and my Senator. Despite some who tried to paint him as a liberal, he has been a very consistent conservative vote throughout his political career.

Portman is not a barn-burner, though. He doesn’t set things on fire. Instead, he methodically works his way through what comes his way, and he does it thoroughly and professionally. He is a good man with no real raps on him other than being Bush’s budget guy.

While he is liked in Ohio, I wouldn’t say he has a rabid following by any means. He probably would have helped to carry Ohio, but that because of favorite-son status and not because he is broadly supported.

I like Portman, but Ryan is a better choice.

The first time I saw Ryan was during the televised Republican healthcare summit with Obama.

When Ryan spoke, his was articulate and in command of the facts and the errors in Obamacare legislation. He spoke of those without referring to notes.

He impressed me then. I had hoped he would jump into the presidential fray last spring.

I am honestly surprised that Romney selected him, but I am glad Romney did. There is no other Republican I would have preferred. I was so apprehensive that Romney might go with Jeb B.
