Lansing's Gun for Groceries buyback has partnered with Meijer to help reduce gun violence.
The event will take place Saturday, August. 18 in the parking lot of the Tabernacle of David Worship Center located at 2645 W. Holmes Rd. in Lansing from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The program provides a $100 Meijer gift card for each operational firearm and an extra $50 gift card on top of that for assault weapons. So far, city officials say they've raised almost $9,000, all of it from private donations.

Private sales of long guns are legal in Michigan.
Private sales of handguns have to fill out some paperwork.
Don't quote me on this without checking, but, I think those with a CCW permit don't need any additional paperwork in this state for handguns.

I don’t claim to be an expert, but that seems mighty cheap. $100 might be okay for grandpa’s old Raven Arms .25, but I’d think any decent pistol or rifle would command a higher price at the local gun shop.
Of course, I’m also assuming these are firearms that have been legally obtained and/or are owned by the people turning them in, which may be a bad assumption on my part.
Unless they destroy them! What was it that Franklin said about”Liberty and Safety”??????????????????????
How about the “operational” part? How are they testing the operability of firearms?
(Mayor Bernero is confident the program will work, but admits it will have its challenges. “How will we measure it? It’ll be the tragedy that never occurs. It’ll be the accidental shooting that doesn’t happen, so it’ll be very difficult to measure,” he said.)
Or it will be the women raped because she gave up her protection or the older couple slaughtered during a home invasion after turning in their only means of defense.........

Makes my head want to explode!!!
Who has an assault weapon? Who would turn it in?

An assault rifle is a selective fire rifle that uses an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine. It is not to be confused with assault weapons.[1] Assault rifles are the standard service rifles in most modern armies. Assault rifles are categorized in between light machine guns, which are intended more for sustained automatic fire in a light support role, and submachine guns, which fire a pistol cartridge rather than a rifle cartridge.
If you had an old gun that wasn’t worth much it might actually be a good deal because then you can go to Meijer’s and buy a better one.
I think the Meijer store near my home doesn't sell guns anymore.
Another opportunity for some thug to follow an unarmed target back to their house.
I haven’t been anywhere near the sporting goods section for so long that I don’t know if the one near me still sells guns or not. I know they do sell plenty of shooting accessories. My neighbor bought a cleaning kit at Meijer the other day.
I don’t believe guns were ever a big moneymaker for Meijer anyway. Dozens of sporting goods stores in the area with far more inventory.
CPL (Concealed Pistol License) holders must fill out form RI-060 when purchasing a handgun. Within 10 days, the original and one copy must be submitted by the purchaser to the police or sheriff department having jurisdiction where the purchaser resides. The law enforcement agency must then forward one copy to the MSP (Michigan State Police).
