Howdy, Kathy! (((hugs)))

It’s my honor and privilege to do this small thing for those
who give so much to us and to America! I’m especially thinking of the families of the 9 who died in the past two days in Afghanistan. Breaks my heart!

Thank YOU for all you do for them...and for us!

In 1833, Frederic Chopin turned out a cute little waltz that he decided to put back in his desk drawer, and it didn’t see the light of day until after his death. Fred probably thought it was a little too cute and perhaps a little too mechanical, but generations of pianists have loved tickling the ivories with this little gem.

Chopin: Waltz in G-flat, Op. 70/1

The year 1834, when Frederic Chopin turned 24, was mostly a year of sketching. His first book of etudes had done so well that he decided to compose a second book, and he spent the year fine-tuning them for publication.

One piece that was completed that year was published In two versions. The first was for solo piano, and the second was for piano and orchestra. Fred had not composed for orchestra in four years, and his technique was as clunky as ever. As a result, the second version is rarely programmed. The first version is one of his great crowd pleasers. There is a slight hint of Bach around 4:00. This performance is by a 14 year old Japanese girl at the New Orleans International Piano Competition for Young Artists. She’s amazing!

Chopin: Andante spianato in G & Grande polonaise brillante in E-flat, Op. 22

Chopin tried his hand at a miniature that he labeled a prelude, and this was five years before he published his magnificent book of preludes, one in each key. This little gem ended up in the desk drawer and has always been something of an orphan. But it’s still quite good.

Chopin: Prelude in A-flat

Upon his arrival in Paris, Fred had been squired by his Polish friends on a tour of the city’s finer bordellos. But now he was on the way to his first relationship where the feelings were mutual. Chopin was about to fall in love. But that’s for next week.
