Obama Says: Doctor, You Did Not Graduate From Medical School
Townhall.com ^ | August 18, 2012 | Hal Scherz

The reason that President Obama uses teleprompters, even when addressing elementary school children, is because he cannot help but reveal who he is and what he believes during moments that involve real spontaneity. He no doubt wishes that he had gotten a “mulligan” for that line that he inadvertently delivered: “you did not build that business”, but it says so much about the man, his agenda, and why he feels the moral superiority to enact it.

Some dismissed the comment, while others called it a Freudian slip. But devotees of Freud maintain that a “slip” is actually caused by an unconscious or repressed wish, feeling or train of thought.

Poker players I know call it a “tell”. I believe it was simply Obama telling America, in a brief moment of honesty, what he really believed about the individual, and their relationship to the state.

“You did not build that business” revealed the antipathy that the president harbors for the individual, especially successful ones. No one is bigger than the state, and hence all that an individual achieves, the government has some claim to- whether it is your wealth, your intellectual property, or you.

Why would President Obama tell the American people lies about doctors, such as “...doctors would rather take out tonsils than treat a sore throat because it pays better” or “… doctors would rather cut off legs for $50,000 than take care of a diabetic before it got to this point”?

It is because he believes that doctors owe fealty to the government for what they have accomplished. Everyone has claim to their success. People need to see them for what they really are- rich, money driven mercenaries. He also needs to denigrate them in order for his agenda to succeed.

“Listen up”, he was saying to doctors. You did not achieve straight A’s in college, working into the late night and on weekends, while your roommates were out partying. Those grades could not have happened without the schools, paid for in part with Federal aid.

You did not graduate from medical school, putting in thousands more hours of studying and hard work. The government subsidized part of the school; your degree belongs to us all.

You did not complete your surgical residency, devoting tens of thousands of hours over 6-9 years, learning your craft and honing your skills, sacrificing your personal life in doing so. No, the government was right there, sending money to the hospitals where you learned how to become a surgeon. You could not have done this without Uncle Sam.

You did not succeed in your medical practice, working on average 60-80 hours every week, missing children’s birthday parties, anniversaries, soccer games and school plays. You did not pay exorbitant malpractice insurance rates to protect yourself from those who wish to prey on your ill-gotten gains.

You did not perform that life-saving cancer operation. The government was there every step of the way and made it possible for that to have happened. Why, the very road that you traveled to get to the hospital that day was built by all of the taxpayers.

And that gang banger that you treated in the emergency room for free in the middle of the night, which the government forced you to see, thanks to the EMTALA law, was something that they felt entitled to take from you- your time and skill- because they own a piece of you.

Herein is the essence of President Obama’s ideology. It is one that not only diminishes personal achievement, but goes on to claim that the fruits that are borne out of the toil leading to that achievement are to be shared with the state and hence everyone.

Obamacare is rooted in this philosophy. The doctors who are being counted upon to care for patients are merely footnotes in this massive new bureaucracy. The healthcare system is being turned upside down with the federal government in charge of deciding who gets what kind of care, by whom, where and how much they will pay for it. Those who engineered Obamacare believe that they can do this because they feel that they own a piece of every doctor in America and that the government has a right to this work.

It becomes easier to do this by convincing Americans that healthcare is an entitlement, and consequently, someone has to provide that care for them. It becomes easier for people to feel that sense of entitlement, if they believe that their doctors are not the compassionate individuals that they thought they were, but rather, greedy opportunists like the President has depicted them.

On the current path, the worst is yet to come. Doctors are quitting in anticipation of government controlling their practices. Doctor shortages are here, but will soon reach epic proportions. Covert rationing of care is coming because there will not be enough doctors to see patients.

There is still time to change course, but the window of opportunity is quickly closing. November 6 will be a referendum on what kind of America we want to have- one where personal achievement is valued, or one where everyone lays claim to those achievements.

This doc will retire before Obamacare is fully implemented. Even if I have to work at walmart to put the kids through school. I’m no stranger to hard work...I will find some way to finish outriding my kids through college. It’s my daughter in pre med I worry about. I’m trying hard to get her to make another choice

I am also going to retire before Obamacare ruins medicine. I discouraged my children from going to medical school. I have a daughter with a PharmD. who has regular hours, enjoys her work, and makes over $120K.

Don’t worry, the H1-b quotas for doctors will only increase to fill the void.

The AMA supported Obama and his plan.

The AMA has long ceased to be an organization that represents the views of the "grassroots" of American doctors. Less than 20% of all American doctors are currently members, quite a contrast to the time when a significant majority were (and the AMA opposed socialized medicine and Medicare). That small percentage of physicians who are currently affiliated with the AMA tend to be government employees and academics largely funded by government.

The AMA derives a substantial chunk of its income nowadays from a cozy "copyright" arrangement with the federal government on Medicare billing codes. These code books produced and copyrighted by the AMA are sold to doctors' offices. By government fiat, the Medicare codes contained in them must be used in order for those offices to bill Medicare for physicans and other services. Thus the medical practices are coerced into buying a product from the AMA if they want to bill Medicare. (The same AMA codes are used for other insurance billing as well.) The AMA has in effect a government-granted monopoly in this area, and its business with the billing codes only figures to expand if Obamacare is not repealed.

That was no Freudian slip. The remark was a deliberate statement of contempt for the principles of self-reliance, entrepreneurship, independence, success.

I suspect he has a particular animus to the medical profession ...

No. It's America and her accomplished, hard-working people that he despises, and their esteem of freedom. He wants to break this country to totalitarianism. Medicine is one of his points of attack, because medicine is a needed service.

But really, he doesn’t know much about anything in particular, so it’s best to attribute it all to stupidity.

Malice.

Obama and his co-venturers are existential intellectual criminals. They prey on the professions and on success wherever people achieve it, and rob those people out in order to appropriate their services, their knowledge, and their dutiful attention for all the tweakers, clockers, and pushers in their retinue, because "I am a river to my people!" </off Anthony Quinn, in character in Lawrence of Arabia>

They and "their people" are a nomad army, raiding and preying on the industry and success of their neighbors and betters. They and the sociopathology they represent have been more or less constant since the time of the Gutian conquest of the cities of Sumeria.

You are really giving up being a doctor because of CommieCare? How many other docs are doing the same?

There was a "brain drain" in the U.K. in the early 1960's, and the expatriate English doctor became a familiar sight in U.S. hospitals.

Now, many doctors working in the U.K. are Pakistani, and many of those are women -- lack of opportunity at home drove them out, and they came to the U.K. and the West to pursue their profession(s). Some people in the U.K. worry if all this compensatory outsourcing won't lead -- sooner than the blathering down at the Finsbury Park mosque of "Abu 'Orrible" and his fuzzy-wuzzy imams could do it -- to the Islamization of England.

This essence of Obama’s ideology is reflected in one of the major differences between Republicans and Democrats with the question, “To whom do the fruits of labor belong?” To a Republican, the fruits of ones labor belongs to the individual, with a small portion of the fruit of their labor going to provide for the legitimate functions of government. To a Democrat, the fruits of ones labor belongs to the government, which “graciously” allows the worker to keep a portion for himself.

Agree with what you say there, Nevadan, but the 'Rats grudge against physicians, which is the crux of the posted article, is even more intense than against other self-achievers, because of the left's socialized medicine scheming.

Please see my post # 13.

A while back I had read a news article about a Dr. in Sutter County CA that had his payment for a visit for medical patients cut to $12, and he said he was losing money but he understood the budget cuts were needed. I emailed him and reminded him that the unionized social workers that merely processed people into the system made good wages with lots of time off, free healthcare and great pensions, all taxpayer paid, and they had fought to have the DR. rate cut instead of theirs. The Dr. had to work long hours, pay his own insurance, pay for his employees, and plan for his own retirement (which was likely delayed for years getting education and paying school loans).

"You didn't build that," along with "You don't own that," and "It's for the common good" are the roots of marxist collectivism. There is no individual worth; one has value only as part of a collective.

Groups are moved around like tiles on a "RISK" board, assigned their necessary place by god-like czars who know better than they what is best for society. Resistance to that tyranny -- assertion of individual rights and authority -- is marked as "hostility to the State" and the offender "re-educated" or eliminated.

And membership in the AMA dropped like crazy. I think the AMA has only about 17% of all docs in the USA as members.

My wife of 32 years has been a general surgeon in private practice since 1985. She came up thought the Old Boys Network, when female surgeons were few. We went through graduate school and residency on the south side of Chicago for 5 years, giving up our young married life to a commitment to people. We lived in a one bedroom 800 square foot apartment behind Michael Reese Hospital, on 31st and King Drive, as minority white folks, sacrificing all for 80-120 hour workweeks (before PC got in the way and now the puss* surgical residents have limited hours).

In private practice, she works typically 12-14 hour days, 6 days per week. We had no government loans, supported ourselves, and have saved diligently and progressed. Now, Obama is trying to take it all away. Well, guess what? She will retire, in her last prime years, rather than become a clerk to the leftist entitlement mentality. We well remember the night Obama made those statements on national TV about greedy doctors. I cannot tell you all politely about my white-hot rage and hatred toward Obama and his wife. I so despise them that I cannot stand the sound of his lispy, lilting cadence, I cannot tolerate the sight of his sneering, awful arrogance, his ugly, awful fraud of a spouse.

I cannot tolerate “Americans’ who support Obama, and have cut ties to family and friends who do. I pray we here, the Tea Party, and thinking Americans can rid us of this plague, this malignancy, this utter fraud of Affirmative Action, from OUR White House.

Insanity...
The practical outcome of the 2008 election. Good doctors saying “I quit”...
We HAVE to get a change in the White House.

The primaries are over; Romney is who we have; like him or not.
We now have 2 choices one can vote for in 2012 to actually put a person in the White House.
Saying how Romney is a poor choice is fine; he probably is.
But the die is cast (barring a miracle) for 2012. More Obama or Romney? There will be 2 ovals on your ballot in November; you can darken one of them.
People really need to think things through on what it will look like 3 and 4 years from now based on who is elected.

I'm probably naive; but I think a conservative House and Senate can help keep Romney accountable.

Me too. I’m mid 50’s, and have saved enough to retire...just like all the state workers here in MO. I’m getting fed up!

My daughter is starting her 2nd yr of Med School this week...I tried to talk her into another field, but she would have none of that.

More insanity.
These stories remind of the Russian Revolution where anyone with property or talent was hounded or killed by the covetous power hungry Bolsheviks drunk with power.

Barack and Michelle have obvious chips on their shoulders making the "owed fealty" an arrogant reality.

CHICAGO — Barack Obama first kissed the woman who would become his wife outside a Chicago ice cream shop — and now there’s a [3,000 lb.] plaque to prove it.

Beyond foolish in a nation of hurt.

Romney/Ryan are the Statesmen we've been waiting for.
