The Chick-fil-A same-sex marriage debate doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon. Ever since President Dan Cathy stated his stance on gay marriage last month, the fast-food chain has been under scrutiny.

Now, some University of Maryland students and staff are working to get the restaurant off their campus.

They’re using online petitioning via change.org to persuade Adele H. Stamp Student Union officials to remove the restaurant, reports campus newspaper The Diamondback,

Let them keep spinning out their delusions. It’ll all come back to haunt them in November.

U of M students who disagree (if there are any) should launch a petition to get the U of M out of town....

I wonder how these students feel about the LGBT shooter at the FRC? Will they sign a petition to pressure the SPLC to stop listing the FRC as a hate organization?

I would like to know what proportion of faggot students this protest is led by. If it is a majority oe just a fringe movement. I live in Md., and we will send these students a message in the November elections when we vote on the referendum against same sex marriage.

Close the friggin place up is this is all they have to do while studying to become America’s new generation of whiners.

A few hundred thousand conservative protesters show up at Chick-fil-A vs 3 students going out to get 'signatures' on a petition... who get better more press coverage?

They aren't even "going out" to get signatures; they're using a lefty online petition site. Not a heck of a lot of work. And, says the article at the link, they are "aiming for 1,000 signatures." Out of a student body of 37,000, not even counting faculty and staff, I'd say they'd best not be business majors.

The link is loading so slowly I must continue to paraphrase here. The manager of the University food court said that CFA has an air-tight contract for the coming student year, and that "students will vote with their feet", adding that of all the UM food court stands last year, CFA was voted #1.

The article also related that a previous petition against McDonald's for ostensible animal cruelty did not result in a removal from campus.

And lastly, I went to change.org and searched under "Education" and "Gay Rights" [sic] for the petition, and could not locate it.

I'll play devil's advocate here. If there was a fast food chain in which the owner openly advocated homosexuality and was himself a practicing homosexual who lived with another man, and conservative students got together to get this restaurant removed from their campuses, would we on Free Republic be cheering them on or attacking them for being against free speech and free enterprise?

An interesting question.

Of course, I believe that this effort to remove Chick Fil-A from campus is silly. All these students have to do is simply not go there. Without customers, they would be forced to shut down. But of course, these "high-minded" students no doubt realize that a large percentage of the student body probably has no objections to the owner of this chain exercising his right to free speech so instead, the seek to forcibly impose their morality upon the rest of their fellow students - just like a totalitarian regime would do. Also, it probably makes them feel self-important, which a lot of insecure young people have a need for. Chances are, these students have low self-esteem and are probably getting lousy grades to boot.

Adele H. Stamp Student Union seems to be owned and managed by the university's division of student affairs.

That doesn't mean that there isn't a nonprofit organization in there someplace, but checking the net didn't surface anything like that.

That means, of course, it's just another jackbooted arm of the fascist state and the lawsuit will probably succeed beyond their wildest dreams (when it happens)

Note, many large state universities have independent, privately owned student unions.

Yes, its true what you say of students being insecure and needing “causes” to bolster them.

As far as your question goes, No, I don’t imagine FReepers would mind if conservative students petitioned a gay restaurant. But think about it: Social conservatives have been vastly outnumbered on this issue since the early ‘90s. So the playing field is not level.
