Obama: Pass jobs bill, rehire teachers
Washington Times ^ | August 18, 2012 | David Eldridge

President Obama on Saturday said school districts around the country could begin rehiring the more than 300,000 teachers and other education workers who have lost jobs since 2009 if congressional Republicans would pass his stalled jobs bill.

“The jobs bill that I sent to Congress last September included support for states to prevent further layoffs and to rehire teachers who’d lost their jobs. But here we are — a year later with tens of thousands more educators laid off — and Congress still hasn’t done anything about it,” the president said in his weekly radio address.

“At a time when the rest of the world is racing to out-educate America; these cuts force our kids into crowded classrooms, cancel programs for preschoolers and kindergarteners, and shorten the school week and the school year,” he said. “That’s the opposite of what we should be doing as a country.”

According to a report released Saturday by the White House, student-to-teacher ratios climbed from 15.3-to-1 in 2008 to 16-to-1 in 2010 as states and local school districts laid off more than 300,000 teachers and education workers.

The plea for more funding drew an enthusiastic thumbs-up from one of Mr. Obama’s biggest political allies, the National Education Association, the nation’s largest labor union.

Surely even you selfish Right Wing Nuts would agree that we need to take your money away from you to hire more of these hard working, highly productive, underpaid, self-sacrificing, unionized, democrat-voting civil servants in order to keep the student-teacher ridiculously low!

Bathhouse Barry’s mantra is about teachers, police, and firefighters. He thinks they are a hot button for voters, and he considers them the “private sector.” The b00b understands nothing about this country and its foundations.

Never mind that many of these layoffs by localities are in lieu of finally confronting the municipal unions about the unaffordable pension obligations. The Dark Lord tried to peddle this crap in ‘09 and now he wants to sell it to us again. Just stop.

If the private sector is doing so fine as obama say’s ...Why can’t the local governments afford to hire there own teachers? Should be no problem being able to afford it with all those prosperous communities paying taxes.

In my little town/school, the freshmen students have to take a math/redo and English/redo class along with their regular math and English class....why? Because they never even had English or math textbooks until the 6th grade. Now in order to take the redo classes they are not allowed to take AG class which is what most of the boys in this area prefer. Poor, underpaid teachers....NOT..

Illinois teacher pension fund is so underfunded our great governor Quinn wants to make the local school districts take over that debt.....by raising taxes on the property owners...who are mostly farmers & most of them don’t even have a child or grandchild in the school system. The majority of the teachers don’t even live in the school district they teach in...go figure!

If this insanity keeps up we will someday be spending 100% of GDP on public schools government schools.

But the democrats and the unions will still be squawking for more.

I wonder how many of these 300,000 are actually teachers since the schools are filled with “ helpers” and assorted other janitors, cafeteria workers, assistants to assistants.... Vice principles of vice principles ...

My bet is most of that number are these types of people since teachers are actually needed...

Does this man not know that the type of jobs he puts on the table to create does not create more jobs. You need to have manufacturing plants that sell products that expand into larger manufacturing plants which in turn hire, which in turn pays taxes, which in turn makes money, which in turn can then pay for our teachers.

Yeah, get rid of the unions too! Teachers should not be allowed to retire after 25 years on a full pension. That is ludicrous and unsustainable. We just can’t afford to pay full salaries on retired teachers for the remaining 30 or 40 years.

Building roads and bridges does not bring more income into the system. Once done - nothing comes back. What planet did he come from again?

I’m thinking why should Obama limit himself to just teachers in his “jobs” bill? Why not expand the jobs bill and print enough money to hire EVERYONE who is unemployeed? Not just teachers. And while he’s at it, set the salaries at $100,000.00. That should solve the unemployment problem, right?

Sounds good O, but I dont teach and I could use a job.
Theres not much construction going on but I could teach others how to build stuff. I dont need much either. Twenty grand if I work at home. Forty grand if I have to get up and drive somewhere.

If the only thing stopping me from having a job is evil reps then I hope they get whats coming to them.

I like the way you think. Nancy said unenjoyment checks stimulate the economy so why not stimulate me and millions others with a couple years of unenjoyment checks. Make the rich republicans pay for it.
