After a convoluted series of events, embattled GOP Senate nominee Todd Akin stood up CNN host Piers Morgan in prime time tonight and set the stage for a fundraising drive that Akin hopes would keep him in the U.S. Senate race in Missouri. Outraged, Morgan called Akin a "gutless little twerp" before saying that the Congressman has an open invitation to appear on the show.
Both Piers Morgan and showrunner Jonathan Wald alerted the world that Akin would be appearing on CNN at 9pm to discuss his controversial comments regarding rape, pregnancy and abortion, and to discuss the widespread GOP calls for dismissing himself from the GOP nomination.
Shortly afterwards, however, Dana Loesch reached out to the Akin campaign and discovered that Rep. Akin was not to appear on CNN.
Which is how we ended up looking at Piers Morgan and an empty chair at 9pm.
Earlier today, the National Republican Senatorial Committee announced that they would not be spending money to support Akin, and GOP Super PAC American Crossroads followed suit. In a bid to raise some money after these abandonments, Akin launched a fundraising drive this evening, saying "I'm in this to the end" and "I've just begun to fight."
The people from Missouri who elected me know Im not perfect. They dont make perfect people. We all make mistakes. When you make a mistake you to tell people youre sorry, you dont try and hide it. I made a mistake and Im sorry, Akin says in the email. I have just begun to fight and Im in this race to the end!
Akin has until tomorrow evening to leave his race for the Senate seat from Missouri if the Republicans are to have any chance of replacing him on the ticket.
I believe it would be best if Aiken left, and I also believe he will not. He will screw up the Missourri election badly.
Aiken is an idiot about biology, but that doesn’t make him a twerp. Maybe now he will grow a pair and actually become a fighter. I guess we will see.It would be fun to watch a Republican who was a fighter for a change. What has he got to lose? He is toast otherwise. He already stepped in it, might as well stop pussyfooting.
It is time for his staff to resign en masse, but I haven’t seen any reports what they might be thinking.
Well, great.
Yes, he can “fight,” but to what end? He`s now radioactive, will have no funding to speak of, and he`s going to draw out the liberal base in Missouri, likely costing Romney that state if he sticks around until November.
By himself, he has altered not only the likely balance of power in the Senate, but the national election as well. If he is truly patriotic and will put the country first, he`ll step aside today. What he does between now and 5 p.m. CDT will tell us everything we need to know about what kind of man he is. He sounds more like someone driven by pride and ego, so I`m not hopeful.
CNN lost their opportunity to further trash Akin; cannot be too big a loss for Akin; the viewership for CNN is minimal. Who notices an empty chair in an empty stadium?
Good for Akin for not wasting his time with a media intent on making Republicans look bad. Where is the empty chair for Biden?
Will someone please explain
EVERYONE has blown this way out of proportion. The guy misspoke! (57 states). The Dems, the press, and the REPUBLICANS have all joined forces to destroy this man. A God fearing man. I hope he stays in and proves you all wrong.
Do you believe that he thinks there is such a thing as a “legitimate” rape? Of course you don't. So why are you crucifying him?
He doesn't believe in the rape & incest exceptions, EITHER SHOULD YOU! Why is it okay to murder the child in those cases? Is it less of a child? If you are opposed to abortion, yet support the exceptions, who do you think you are.....GOD? SHAME, shame on you.
I just saw his Dem opponent on Fox this morning defending him and complaining that the GOP leadership was trying to get him to step down. Clair was just so upset! That ought to tell us something right there!
I don’t get it what the problem is that everyone has with Todd Akin. According to vote smart.org Todd Akin is 100% pro life
The fact is not that he made a stupid statement...the fact is that he opened the door for the “male haters” to slam him for his perceived beliefs and that smears “hate sauce” all over every other Republican in the eyes of these women...many who are registered Republicans.
He has become a “lightning rod” for the Democrats (mostly women) and man hating women in the Republican party to scream and have fits over his statement...all in the name of advancement of the destruction of freedom of speech.
I agree with you, and I feel even if he does stay and fight he wil just dig himself deeper. I was trying to put a better slant on i, but I truly believe he is just another politician who has fallen in love with the perks of office and just cannot give them up.
I guess we will know this evening.
Akin’s stupid. However the GOP is stupid as well for being so quick to throw him under the bus. The GOP should not have announced they are pulling all funding. It’s like they’re giving the seat to McCaskill now.
