Akin called on colleague to resign for DUI
buzzfeed ^ | aug 2012

Rep. Todd Akin, facing calls to step aside from his bid to challenge Sen. Claire McCaskill, once called for his party's state house leader to resign his leadership post following a drunk driving incident, according to local news reports.

Akin, who used the term "legitimate rape" to argue the false claim that women who are raped don't get pregnant, called on then Missouri House GOP leader, Mark Richardson, to quit his post in 1997.

From the Columbia Tribune:

Republican lawmakers interviewed yesterday said they were expecting Richardson to step aside. ``That is the logical thing, just in terms of keeping our focus on legislation,'' said Rep. Todd Akin, R-St. Louis.

A host of Republican leaders have called on Akin to resign. Sen. John Cornyn has pledged to without NRSC support unless Akin quits the race against the vulnerable Democrat.

Akin “used the term ‘legitimate rape’ to argue the false claim that women who are raped don’t get pregnant”?

No, he used the term “legitimate rape” as a synonym for “violent rape,” and to differentiate it from those instances of consensual sex where the woman is simply looking for an excuse to have an abortion or blame the guy.

I challenge everyone to view the raw footage of the interview, here:

It’s the third video down on the page.

DUI or one wrong word. Same thing. Murder. Same thing. Treason. Same thing. All the same.

Since when is drunk driving comparable to saying something dumb about rape? The sleazy tactics of leftists have been adopted by Republicans and alleged conservatives.

It's no wonder decent people don't want to become involved in politics.

Akin needs to do the right thing

Right thing for who? The Republican establishment so it can put up the candidate it wants?

He shouldn't even think about stepping down unless he knows someone as conservative as he is will be taking his place.

How will we have compromised our principles if Akin steps down and is replaced by another more electable pro-life candidate?

How could one even begin to equate Saving Babies from Death and Driving Drunk and possibly killing babies?

The political process is so sleazy that conservatives and Republicans are just as sleazy as Democrats. It's sickening to anyone with moral compass just as it is equally sickening to vote for someone as morally corrupt as Mitt Romney.

Welcome to FR. You sound like you're from the Akin campaign, or maybe one of Huckster's staff.

Is it worth losing the Senate or 0bamacare repeal for Todd Akin?

The Republican convention is coming up, Romney/Ryan’s best opportunity to get out their message and define themselves. And now this Akin fiasco is going to overshadow the entire convention.

Maybe if the "conservative" media and Republican establishment would stop throwing a hissy fit about his comments, that wouldn't be the case.

If he really cared about the prolife issue, he'd GET OUT and let someone with his values, but not his taint, take his place.

He won't save a single baby by reelecting Claire McCaskill, easily costing the GOP the Senate and maybe even more.

It'll be on his head.

Sometimes leadership means knowing when it's time for you to step aside. Sarah Palin understood that, Todd Akin is too blinded by his own pride and selfishness withdrawal from the ballot.

Please show me where I equated a dumb statement and a DUI. I’ll save you the time. I didn’t.

-— Republican lawmakers interviewed yesterday said they were expecting Richardson to step aside. ``That is the logical thing, just in terms of keeping our focus
on legislation,’’ said Rep. Todd Akin, R-St. Louis. -—

I find it ironic that Akin thought the focus on legislation was important then but apparently it is not now. For the good of the party and the issues they wanted to advance, it was the logical thing that his colleague step down. Akin’s dumb statements will now become the primary focus and the legislation he favors will be but a minor distraction. His message of saving babies in the womb will not get out. He punched a hole in the boat and doesn’t care who goes down with him. Todd, the world does not revolve around you. Others are pro-life and will champion the cause to save babies.

Both Brunner and Steelman ran very close and had conservative supporters. Combine that with the documented evidence that Claire McCaskill wanted Akin and invested in the primary to put him over the top, and I think there is a pretty convincing case that dropping out is the right thing for Akin to do at this point.

He brought this on himself. Completely self-inflicted.

Geez, would Rush just quit droning on about this Akin crap? Let’s get on to other things rather than three freaking hours of this.

Well, I guess you can now move on to another non-Romney thread and take a shot at him.

That truly is one of the most naive comments I've ever read on FR. To think that the MSM wouldn't milk this for everything its worth *if only* the conservatives would drop it. Wow.

See 30 below. Egocentric narcissist Akin thinks he is the only one capable of saving babies in the womb. A loss to McCasKILL does not help the cause.

“How will we have compromised our principles if Akin steps down and is replaced by another more electable pro-life candidate?”

Well, we compromise our principles if we negate the results of the primary out of fear of liberals and what they say.

Also, who is to say another Republican candidate would be more electable than Rep. Akin? Especially if pro-life conservatives are turned-off from the piling-on of Rep. Akin?

>>Since when does an inarticulate statement (in defense of the unborn) equal a DUI?<<

“Inarticulate statement”? It was WAY more than an “inarticulate statement.” It was idiocy on steroids.

He is toxic to the conservative movement, at a time we cannot afford it. Akin HAS GOT TO GO.
