New York Times ^ | August 20, 2012 | DOUGLAS QUENQUA

Moleendo Stewart can’t say for sure what’s caused his lifelong sleeping problems. But he has his suspicions.

There’s the childhood spent in loud, restless neighborhoods in Miami. “You hear people shooting guns all night, dealing drugs,” said Mr. Stewart, 41, who lives in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn. He also cites his weight, 260 pounds, down from a peak of 310.

As you have pointed out, it has nothing to do with race and almost everything to do with environment.

Actually the medicos are correct, BUT they are generalizing it by saying "race" -- rather it is let's call it "sub-race" or ethnic groups.

Case in point -- people in Europe and India have a gene that allows them to digest milk. Mongols and Masai do have it as well (from the "Oriental" and "Black" racial stereotypical groups respectively) while Japanese don't have this.

Also, among Europeans too, there are different genetics at play between Nordics and Italians for instance.

Among blacks, those with West African heritage have different genetic issues compared to those with East African heritage

I think one of the reasons why the poor in this country are obese is due to what food they get (note: I’m saying what they “get” — sometimes it is their choice to spend on other things rather than quality food) — if you give them carbohydrates only they will be fat.

ethnicity does -- I'm sure that if one compares a Lapp to a person from say Crete, there will be differences in sleep patterns. I would guess that these sleep patterns continue into second and third generations even if they live in the same area.

it's not "race" as in black v/s white but more to ethnic history.

Also, most "blacks" in this country have some or more "white" blood and vice-versa so that genetic map can go haywire
