There is another option: roll it over into a Roth IRA. Pay the IRS now instead of later, but there are income limits on a Roth.
Sounds good, as long as they are still there as counter-party after the SHTF.
Good to see a broker here. I have quite a bit in Muni's, but share your concern with defaults. Do you know of a web site that lists the bond rating of the cities/counties/ Util districts, etc.? That would be a great tool for me.
Thanks for the tip. I know of the Woodmen organization but wasn’t aware of their offerings.

There is not enough information to sagely advise, but, if OP has the means to defer taking SS until 70 and is healthy, that might be the best route coupled with strategic withdrawal and reinvestment of 401k funds to minimize taxes in the short and long run.
SS benefits increase 8% for every year you defer. Couple that with tax avoidance and you have a very good return.
I would live off the withdrawal and keep them at a level that manages my tax bracket against having a balance by age 70.
Just something to think about...

No income limit to convert an existing ira.
Buy out your lousy govt partner now, before your ira is folded into asocial security.

Are those tax exempt investments?
I worked as a stockbroker many years ago, and I got out for two reasons: one, I couldn't close to save my life (at the time), and EF Hutton focused their efforts on making us life insurance and annuity salesmen.
All I hear nowadays are how great annuities are, and they've been packaged to sell a lot of product. I'm still not sold on them.
I'll probably allocate up to 25% for covered call writing, but that's several years in the future. OTOH, I'd rather spend whatever time I'd need for research on my (now) 2 year old grandson.
